John Charles Penney (“Jack”) entered this life on August 16th, 1927, along with his twin brother James (“Jim”) in Glendale, California, welcomed by their loving parents George and Mariette Penney. Jack went peacefully with the Lord on June 16th, 2018 in Newport Beach, California at the age of 90.
Jack and Jim were the best of friends and inseparable. Shortly before their graduation from Herbert Hoover High School in Glendale, the twins volunteered in the United States Navy in 1945 for the duration of World War II. They were called to duty before the close of school and had to sacrifice formal graduation events, but were given diplomas and college entrance credits. For the first time in their lives they were separated and given different locations for their boot camps and training, but were re-united again under the same assignment on L.S.T. in Tong Tao China. They were honorably discharged on August 7th, 1946.
Jack and Jim received their Bachelor of Arts degrees at Occidental College in 1952 and went on to study Law at U.S.C. Jack graduated with honors. In 1953 they took their California State Bar exam and passed. They immediately entered their life career as attorneys joining in a partnership with their father and continuing with their own firm “Penney and Penney” in Newport Beach until retirement.
Jack was married in 1952 to Judith Chapman and they had two children Daniel Scott and Kerry Susan. Jack was a loving father and helped his children to have every possible opportunity. He shared with his children his love of animals, the ocean, sports and a good joke. Jack was athletic; he boxed in the Navy and in college, was a strong swimmer, a body surfer and played a great game of beach volleyball. He was the biggest fan at his children’s sports events and later for his grandchildren. He loved to attend U.S.C. football games as a loyal booster. Jack and his second wife Jackie were very active together in their church, St. Andrews in Newport Beach.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jackie Penney, his sister-in-law Nancy Penney and his brother Jim Penney. He is survived by his son Dan Penney, daughter-in-law Jean Penney, daughter Kerry Penney Winegarden, son-in-law Frank Winegarden, grandsons Timothy, Stephen, Christopher and Thomas, his great-grandaughter Liliana Penney, his loving nieces, Linda, Gail and Carole and their families and his special caregiver Herman.
Jack will be laid to rest with military honors at Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona del Mar on June 26th, 2018 with the Reverend Ted Hamilton presiding over the memorial service.
Jack was a man of honor and integrity. He will remain in our hearts for as long as we shall live.
