Jack Tate of Newport Beach, California, died November 7, 2016 at the Hoag Memorial Hospital. He was 83. Beloved father, husband and friend, Jack was born and raised in Laurel, Iowa, a small farming community and educated in the local school system. Jack loved Laurel, the people and the land. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1955, first in his class of business. There he also served as a commander in ROTC and had 750 men under his command. It was at the university where he met and married Ann Baker. Together they raised three children and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Upon graduation Jack joined the air force where he piloted nuclear bombers in the Strategic Air Command. After a four-year stint, he left the military to join the Merrill Lynch Brokerage Firm as an account executive. Jack first worked in the Louisville Office, then managed the Davenport Office, and was soon transferred to the Wall Street Office administration where he worked as vice president for 20 plus years. Seeking a quieter life for his family, Jack took a position as manager of the Cleveland Office. And later, in a major life changing decision he reluctantly left Merrill Lynch and joined Monex, a gold and precious metals firm in Newport Beach. Fourteen years later Merrill offered Jack his position back with their firm where he worked up until the time of his death. One of the high points of his career came in 2009 when Jack was named a member of the Merrill Lynch Presidents Club in New York City.
The Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Newport Beach was an important part of the last 35 years of Jack’s life. An active member, he served as president of the Parish Council for several years.
Jack is predeceased by his parents, Delbert and Helen Toedt, a son, Bill, and a brother, Dell. He is survived by his wife, Ann, a daughter, Janice Ressigue, and son Karl. Also grandchildren, Helen (James) Guard, Christian Ressigue, a sister, Joanne Herendeen, and many nieces and nephews.
Jack will be remembered for his Irish sense of humor, his German work ethic, his integrity, financial expertise, and especially for his love for family and friends.
A memorial service will be held Monday, November 14th at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady, Queen of Angels in Newport Beach. Burial will be at a later date in the Graceland Cemetery, Laurel, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Lady, Queen of Angels, Newport Beach.
