Kimberly was born on July 30, 1962 in Marshall, Missouri, the second child of Jesse and Margaret Hawkins and a direct descendant of a hero of the American frontier, Daniel Boone. The Hawkins family lived in the small town of Marshall and had a farm a few miles outside of town that had been in the family for generations. Kimberly grew up helping her father and brother work the family farm growing hay and raising cattle. She learned to drive on the farm and by age 13 was driving trucks and tractors.
During her high school years her talent as an artist started to show through. She went on to attend the University of Central Missouri and after completing her sophomore year she went to California to visit her older brother Tim who had moved to Laguna Beach, CA a few years before. Kimberly and California fell in love and when she returned home she packed her station wagon with clothes and a cat and headed for California. She quickly landed a great job working as the bookkeeper for a company that manufactured Christmas ornaments. Her talent and tenacity were obvious and her role soon expanded to overseeing the
manufacturing operations too. Always on the move, Kimberly saw a career change opportunity and found her niche as a legal secretary and paralegal. She went on to work for several major law firms through the years. One of her most cherished legal career assignments was serving as the direct liaison for her law firm with President Ronald Reagan through the 1990's. She recalled with endearment the one on one time she had with the former President. Kimberly was introduced to David Slater by a mutual friend and the lovestruck couple were married in 1999 on a perfect afternoon at the Pelican Hill Resort in Newport Beach, CA. Their son Cameron was born in 2000 and Kimberly and family settled into a California waterfront and boating life in Huntington Beach, CA. Kimberly was devoted to her family and became a regular figure as a volunteer at her son's school. She took on the role of a Cub Scout leader and shepherded her son along with a large contingent of young boys, from little Tiger Cubs to teenage Boy Scouts. Many of Kimberly's Tiger Cubs have just completed earning the rank of Eagle Scout which is a testimony to her years of caring, giving and guiding. Her son Cameron earned the rank of Eagle Scout in February 2018 and Kimberly was bursting with pride for his accomplishment. Cameron will graduate from
Sage Hill School as a senior in June 2018 in a bittersweet moment because there will be an empty chair in the audience at his graduation ceremony. All who knew Kimberly can attest to how much she loved her son and how proud of him she was. To the delight of those close to her, Kimberly would periodically pull out her easel, her oil paints and a blank canvas. She created amazing paintings and family portraits. She immortalized her beloved pet Lilly, an English Springer and the pets of many friends in spectacular oil portraits. Kimberly was the core of her family and an incredible hostess. She was the catalyst for many family memories including lazy summer afternoons lounging on the family boat at Catalina Island, many Fourth of July celebrations at Haden Lake, Idaho and several grand tours of Europe. In recent years, Kimberly co-founded with brother Tim a Laguna Beach based design consulting firm and was very
passionate about the business.Kimberly was preceded in passing by her parents and is survived by her husband David Slater, her son Cameron, her brother Tim Hawkins and Aunts Linda Connor and Pat Marsh of Marshall, Missouri.
Kimberly will be buried at Pacific View Cemetery in Newport Beach, CA. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at 2:00pm in the chapel at Pacific View. In lieu of flowers, it would honor Kimberly to make a donation to English Springer Rescue America, Inc., a non-profit organization at springerrescue.org.
