Louis J. Matteson traded in his Reyn Spooner for a royal robe just short of his 89th birthday. On Friday, June 16, 2023, after his daily walk with his beloved wife of 66 years, Katherine “Kay” Reese Matteson, Louis peacefully departed this world, finding solace on his wife’s shoulder on the front porch of their Laguna Woods home. His life well lived inspired all who knew him.
Louis was born on July 6, 1934, in Muskegon, MI, the oldest child of Alice Marie Biondi Matteson and Harold Jess Matteson. His unwavering dedication to the Boy Scouts illuminated his character from a young age. At age five, Louis and his family moved to Glendale, where he continued his education. He often reminisced about his years as the lead clarinetist for Herbert Hoover High School Band and for the Glendale Police Boy’s Band recounting stories of his multiple experiences of marching in the Rose Parade.
After completing high school, Louis pursued his passion for engineering by attending the University of Redlands as a Science Major. During his junior year, he met the love of his life, Kay, forging another successful Pi Chi/Theta bond. Louis also proudly represented the U of R Swim Team.
In 1957, one year after graduating, Louis and Kay exchanged vows at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach. They settled in Glendale, where they bought their first home. Louis worked for various companies, including General Controls, Bendix, Lear Siegler, and Ling Altec, leaving his mark as an innovative engineer, ultimately starting his own firm. Louis’ inventions most prominently benefited the aviation and naval industries.
The love of the coast motivated Kay and Louis to move to Newport Beach, where they raised their six children. A true water enthusiast, Louis imparted his love for the ocean upon his family. He delighted in teaching them the art of body surfing, skillfully riding the waves together, and creating lasting memories. More recently, they enjoyed traveling to visit their kids and their families in all four coastal corners of the country. One of Louis’ greatest passions was camping, and he instilled in his family a deep appreciation for the great outdoors. Countless weekends were spent exploring nature’s wonders, pitching tents, and gathering around a crackling campfire. Louis’ patient guidance fostered a sense of confidence and self-reliance in his loved ones. The impact of his love will be carried forward as his family cherishes the lessons and memories he shared.
Louis was a man of unwavering faith whose spiritual journey blossomed at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. He led a Bible study group for police and firefighters, exemplifying his commitment to guiding others. Additionally, he selflessly volunteered as a sound engineer, utilizing his talents to serve others. The Matteson’s home in Newport Beach became a haven for numerous Bible studies, fostering a sense of community. For decades, Louis took immense pride as a dedicated member of the St. Andrews Presbyterian Choir, led by esteemed directors, including Dr. James Melton, who Louis held in the highest regard. Many choir members later formed California Coastal Choral under Milton's guidance.
Louis is preceded by his brother Robert Matteson, survived by his wife Kay, sister Joyce Dieda (Carl), as well as his six children, Richard Matteson (Denise), John Matteson (Susanne), Tom Matteson (Michelle), Kaycie Hersey (Greg), Ann Matteson Saglin (Chris), Sarah Matteson Piszel (Buddy), six grand-children (Dylan, Tyler, Carter, Mitchell, Sarah, and Katie) and four great grand-children (Miles, Sawyer, Palmer Posie, and Maximo). Louis leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and faith. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. May his memory continue to inspire us.
Louis will be laid to rest at Pacific View Memorial Park and Mortuary in Corona Del Mar. A memorial and celebration of life will be held in the little chapel at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach on August 19, 2023, at 11:00 am; a casual onsite reception will follow from 12:00-2:00 pm.
