Born July 11, 1923 to Rebecca and Sam Bruner in Chicago Illinois, “Lakey” as she came to be known, traveled with her family at age six across the country to her new home in California.
She met Oscar Steinberg in high school and they married before Oscar departed for service abroad during World War ll. They raised three sons, Lee, Stan and Leonard in Montebello and West Covina.Louise loved adventure and genuinely lived her life according to the motto that is hung on a poster in her Newport Beach home to this day: Mi casa es su casa!
While her three sons were in school, she earned her own bachelor’s degree from Cal State College (now University) LA. Louise was a life-long educator as well as a reading specialist and tutor.
With the birth of Lee and Suzan’s children, Andrew and Bryn, Louise became a “Bubbie,” and a family matriarch also adopting Suzan as her own. She welcomed all to share at her table including the close friends and significant others of all three of her sons, sharing stories, and tales of adventures while fresh meals were cooked.
At the beginning of the 21st century she gained two new grandsons, David Zachary and Joshua Zev by her Alaska children Leonard Steinberg and Deborah Greenberg with whom she was also very close. At about the same time, she gained five great grandchildren earning her the title of the ”Bigger Bubbie”.
She traveled the world, dodging stampeding elephants in Africa, exploring the wilds of Alaska, visiting Israel, and seeing Europe, and Oceana. She enjoyed urban culture and was always a voracious reader. She appreciated and had an eye for art and beautiful homes and environments. She organized copious numbers of adventures and outings to share with family and friends. She was always available at the drop of a hat to help out when those she loved were in a tight spot or experiencing life’s landmarks including births, illnesses, marriages or educational and artistic accomplishments. She was a good sport, and spoke her mind.
Louise had many dear friends taking them and their families under wing, earning her love, leadership and respect. Even as her health was failing she was strong. When she needed more assistance with the daily business of living, she continued her practice of mi casa es su casa. During the last years of her life, her son, Stanley saw to her needs daily.
She will be sorely missed by family and friends and all those who helped her, whose stories she heard.
She was preceded in death by her husband, of 58 years, Oscar, and her sister, Rochelle Leher. She is survived by her three children, 2 daughters –in-law, 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, niece, Jackie Garren and nephew Lloyd Lehrer and his wife Robin, as well asmany cousins, grand nieces, grand nephews and scores of close members from Steinberg family.
