Mary passed from this life into heaven, March 24, 2017, in her home in Newport Beach, CA. She was born on February 23, 1929, in Newtown, PA, to Mary L. V. Kelly Hay and Benjamin J. Hay. Predeceased by her husband, David L. Saylor, her daughter, Diane L. Saylor, and her grandson, John D. Saylor. Survived by her sons, David L. Saylor, Jr. (Christina), Dean L. Saylor (Kelley), and her daughters, Dayle S. Lankford (Christopher), and Dana L. Friedman (Heath). Also surviving are: Grandchildren, Laura Cooley, Shelby and Madison Lankford, Marybeth Saylor, Joshua Saylor, Hannah and Kaylie Friedman, and one great grandchild, Marley Lankford. She has many Nieces and Nephews, and their Children, who will miss their Aunt dearly.
Mary was the youngest of the four Hay Sisters, and adopted Sis, Kit - all beautiful, inside and out. They moved to Philadelphia while young and attended Germantown High School. In 1948 Mary met the love of her life David Saylor. They married on March 26, 1949 rearing four Children in Plymouth Meeting, PA, until 1967, when they moved west to live in Newport Beach, CA. Dave worked with Allergan Pharmaceuticals, where he and Mary made many wonderful friends. Mary gave birth to their fifth child, and was a talented and creative homemaker while being the best Wife, Mother, Aunt, and Friend she could be. Mary had lifelong friends in PA and CA, whom she loved, and many friends associated with her places of worship, Gloria Dei Lutheran, Ambler, PA, Christ Lutheran, and Calvary Chapel, Costa Mesa, where Mary and Dave were very active. After her children were raised, Mary worked at Hoag Memorial Hospital as a Unit Secretary. She excelled at her job and is remembered by many staff still working at Hoag.
Interestingly, Mary could do tasks around the house that were usually reserved for men. She was also an extraordinary seamstress, having an eye for design and fashion. Also an excellent conversationalist, informed through her love of reading. Above all, Mary loved God, loved her Country, and was a true Patriot.
Being a stunning beauty she stood out in any crowd. However, she was even more distinguished by her inner beauty and strength which came from her deep faith and love for God. This revealed itself in her love for family and friends (always a warm available listening ear and ready hand to help and pray), her desire to serve at church, her passion for volunteering at Hoag Memorial Hospital with the Chaplains' Office, and her enthusiasm to serve on the Los Angeles Federal Grand Jury. David and Mary were privileged to travel with Calvary to Israel four times, smuggled Bibles into China, as well as many other exciting destinations. On these trips they met many of their beloved friends.
If you were to ask Mary where her deepest passions lie, she would tell you it was her faith in Jesus Christ that gave her life meaning. Through her faith she found an unexplainable peace, as well as love, hope and joy despite worldly circumstance. She would want you to know that if your life is missing meaning, look to the One who created you for a purpose; if your life is missing peace, look to the One who gives peace despite contrary circumstances; if you do not feel secure in your final destination, look to the One who has made the way simple and sure by His work on the cross where He cleanses us from our sins and makes us new.
Because she loved others well, she is well loved by others and is greatly missed!
A Memorial Service will be held April 20, 2017 at 2:30 in the afternoon at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa in Santa Ana.
Arrangements under the direction of Pacific View Memorial Park and Mortuary FD1176, Corona Del Mar, CA.
