Matthew Roger Thiede passed away at the age of 39 on August 16, 2020 at his home in Newport Beach with his parents, Kathy and Roger by his side.

Matt was a highly energetic young boy with a non-stop attitude. He loved all sports and competitively participated in many different ones. He was on the varsity baseball team at Corona del Mar High School which won CIF Division IV his senior year. The game was played at the Angel Stadium and his team sat in the Angels dugout. After High School, Matt enrolled at the University of Arizona. During the summer between his freshman and sophomore year he sustained a spinal cord injury while diving into the ocean. For the next 20 years Matt worked at reclaiming his life. He drove to rehabilitation (Project Walk) 3-5 days a week for 10 years trying to get the nerves to reconnect so he could walk. Unfortunately that didn't happen. He also went back to college and got his AA degree from Orange Coast College and his Bachelors degree from Cal State Long Beach. Matt was a very kind, passionate, and caring man who loved his friends and family. He will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Matthew's honor to Canine Companions for Independence.

Bo Bentley

The hearts of the Bentley family have been heavy-laden since we learned that Matt no longer graces this earth with his laughter and precious spirit. We cannot count the number of times he made us smile! In fact, while going through picture albums, we often debated if that guy with his head tilted up, laughing, was Matt. It often was, because he couldn't seem to stay serious for long! Roger and Kathy, two of us are medically unable to tell you this in person, two are care-givers, and two are working, but we all want you to know how touched our lives have been, and we send much love from Brooke, Bo, Blake, Britt, Jen (Bif) and Bay.

Growing up Matt and I shared limitless good times together. We were teammates annually in athletics starting at 7 years old (baseball and soccer) including a memorable AYSO State Championship team. Matt actually taught me how to shoot billiards at around 9 years old at the YMCA in East Bluff and I still shoot left handed just like Matt, the only thing that I currently do left handed. Matt was very talented with his coordination an amazingly, before he was 10 years old Matt made a hole in one on the 1st Hole of Newport Beach Golf Course (he also broke my putter one day while we were at the driving range from swinging too hard using it as a driver LOL) Kathy also gave my brother and I our first jobs ever delivering the Buffalo Hills Echo throughout the neighborhood on roller-blades with Matt, something at was on my resume till i graduated college. In High School, we played together on another successful team at CDM that won many baseball games including the last one. My condolences to the Thiede family, Matt was a stand out athlete, energetic spirit (with a powerful voice) and a great friend. Matt you are missed.

Kathy and Roger,

I am beyond devastated for your loss. Matt was a great friend, teammate, and son. I will cherish the many memories that we shared with your family. The 1999 CIF Championship game sits at the top and I frequently find myself thinking about that moment and the team we had. A bunch of friends who grew up together and came together to win the big one in the end. My condolences to you and your family.

With Love,

Mark Hatfield

Kathy and Roger,
We share in your sorrow.
We have shared so many memories / good times together of our sons growing up... Little League, High School Baseball and Cub Scouts come to mind. My Mom still talks of the picnic we had with you at CDM Beach.
It was a joy to watch Matt grow up!
We were devastated, along with you, hearing of his accident.
You all handled that situation with so much love and a “whatever it takes mode”. You three are an inspiration to all!
I have no doubt, and totally believe, that you will see each other again and share everlasting joy and peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Love and hugs,
Susan and Steven Bottom

Roger & Kathy-
I met Matthew while Kathy was changing his diapers on your living room floor in June of 1981. I watched how you surrounded him with love, security, direction and coaching for the next 39 years.

I trust that you will be comforted by 1 Corinthians 2:9 (NKJV) "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him"

Thinking of you and remembering Matt. Our next door neighbors from 1980 to 1992.
Such a flood of memories poured into my head.
Roger with his booming voice standing on your side of the front flowerbed announcing “we’re going to have a baby”.
Matt couldn’t have been but six months old when you passed him over the back fence and you two followed using a ladder so we all could have cocktails without alerting the nosy neighbors!
Emily was only 8 years old when Matt was born. She so loved being invited to your house to “babysit” and play with him.
Sending our love.

Roger & Kathy,
I have many memories of your son. Matt and I became close friends about a year after his accident, although I’ve known him since childhood. My parents have always been close friends with you guys.
Matt was a true inspiration to me (and many many others I’m sure).
Words cannot detail this inspiration fully. Matt’s condition helped me really value my health. And it was TRULY INCREDIBLE & AWE INSPIRING seeing what this guy was capable of. I mean, the guy was a quadriplegic, and he became incredibly independent. One example is when I was spending a lot of time with him at his home in Tustin. At this point he was living there alone, although I’d spend about half the nights there. One day I went to work(he was home working for me marketing my business). When I returned, there was an ikea item that was fully built standing perfectly in the garage. I kind of looked around and thought, how did that thing get built? Matt built it himself that day. I was flabbergasted. That’s one small example of the amazing fortitude he possessed. Matt never wanted any pity or sympathy. He never wanted anyone to open door for him. He made me value everything I have. He was one of my best friends. I love him dearly. He will be missed greatly and will always hold a place in my heart.

Our families have been friends for as long as I can remember- Roger, growing up I got to witness and be apart of the very special bond between you and my dad! I have many great memories of fishing trips, horse races, Jamaica, and of Matt being born! We were so excited for you and Kathy! I cherish and am grateful for all the memories. Matt was an amazing person who accomplished so much. My thoughts and heart are with you both.

Matt,
You were always a good friend and a brother to me. Growing up so close to each other, we shared so many good memories together since we were little kids. All the holidays we shared together and my trips to come see you at UA were times I will never forget. You had a huge heart, giving, kind and would help anyone in need. Those are traits that rubbed off on me and thank you for that. I miss you brother and I will see again one day.
