Born on July 24, 1935 in Appleton, WI, Bob grew up in Moose Lake, Minnesota, living with his mother and brother Jim and grandparents in the family owned Moose Lake Hotel. His family moved to Minneapolis in 1948 where Bob attended Jefferson High then West High School. He excelled academically, graduated Valedictorian and was invited to attend Harvard, MIT and Yale. He chose Yale as it provided a welcome scholarship.
He graduated Yale in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies and a Bachelor of Science in medical school pre-requisites. He went on to attend the University of Minnesota Medical School and graduated in 1961.
Bob moved to California where he interned at Harbor General in Torrance and started a Radiology Residency at Wadsworth VA Hospital. It was at this time he preferred the thought of travel in Europe and Asia and followed his heart, leaving for a year he said was the best of his life.
Bob returned to California in 1963 where he purchased a Family Practice in Huntington Beach. This provided him the base to practice medicine where, over the years, he became a very popular and busy Family Practitioner, treating the families in that community over at least two successive generations.
He joined Staff at Hoag Hospital in 1964.
Bob’s interests were wide and eclectic and each of them over the years inspired a passionate desire to understand and master, immerse and enjoy.
In 1954, Bob took his first flying lesson and in 1956, earned his pilots license.
His sailing career started with the purchase of a 12’ Aquacat and progressed to a Santa Ana 22 and then the 45’ Thorobred he owned and sailed around the Channel Islands. He raced for Voyagers Yacht Club and regularly participated in the Beer Cans in Newport Harbor. He also owned and sailed a Dutch Botter in Holland.
He was a member of the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club until resignation due to waning health.
He owned and sold antiques, traveling to Europe and east coast to gather treasures for sale in Orange County and for his own enjoyment.
Bob had an interest in construction and in the early 1970’s built tilt-up industrial buildings in Orange County.
He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and spent much of his time off-roading and desert riding with lifelong friends. He rode Harleys and collected antique cars and more recently sold his last 1920 Pierce Arrow 6 Passenger Tourer without regret.
He was also proud of his low membership number in the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors where he has been a member for many years.
He loved to hike, camp, RV and ski and all of these activities led to life-long relationships with people of the same persuasion who became his dearest friends.
Bob is survived by his wife, Kim, his former wife Carol and a few remaining dear friends left who brought joy to his day with a simple call, right to the end.
There will be a Graveside Service at Pacific View Memorial Park and Celebration of Life, the date to be announced in the near future.
