Shelly was born on December 16, 1932, in Peoria, Illinois and was the only child of Victor and Virginia Claude. When she was nine, her parents relocated to Southern California. Shelly attended Dorsey High School and when she was 18 she eloped on a Harley Davidson in Yuma Arizona. Kathy was born in 1952 and in 1954, mom was widowed. She found a great job, bought her own car and moved on with her life as a single mother. Our mother was a survivor. Soon after, she met Roy Anderson on a blind date, they fell madly in love and were married June 30, 1956. They settled in the San Fernando Valley where Kerri was born in December of 1964. Dad was transferred with his job to Fountain Valley in 1969 where they lived for over 40 years. Our dad passed away in 2008 after battling Alzheimers. Shelly took care of Roy to the end and was heartbroken. They were married almost 52 years.
Shelly was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. For over 30 years, she and dad enjoyed attending UCLA football games with friends. She started working at GMAC in the 1950’s, was employed by Bullocks Wilshire, was a successful real estate agent and worked with Kerri at the Irvine Company. After retiring in the 90’s, we enjoyed playing Rumi-Kub together every Wednesday for over 25 years. She indulged in many hobbies such as oil painting, sketching, wreath making, scrap booking and bowling. Shelly was an incredible hostess and cook throwing lavish dinner parties and poker nights with friends. Shelly loved all animals, especially her beloved dogs. In 2009, she moved to Laguna Woods where she enjoyed games with new friends and eventually moved to an assistant living facility in Laguna Hills, where she made even more friends playing games and creating a dinner group called “The Merry Widows.” Mom was loved by many family and friends.
Mom is survived by her daughters Kathy Munz (Michael Munz) and Kerri DeMars (David DeMars), grandchildren Taylor Munz (Mallory Munz), Nicole DeMars, Natalie DeMars, Danielle DeMars and great-grandchildren, Violet and Brooks Munz, as well as step-grandchildren Allyn Rich and Bramley Munz and great-granddaughter, Hunter Rich.
A private ceremony with immediate family will be held in October; however, extended family and friends can go on the Pacific View Cemetery website (in Newport Beach) and upload memories and photos with Shelly. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Orange County Chapter.
If roses grow in heaven,
Lord please pick a bunch for me,
Place them in my Mother’s arms
and tell her they’re from me.
Tell her I love her and miss her,
and when she turns to smile,
place a kiss upon her cheek
and hold her for awhile.
Because remembering her is easy,
I do it every day,
but there’s an ache within my heart
that will never go away.
If Roses Grow in Heaven” – Dolores M. Garcia
