Roy was born on November 27, 1931, in Biggs, California, the youngest of three children. On the family rice farm, Roy proved from an early age, he was resourceful, and his confidence in his ability to solve problems served him well his entire life. Roy was influenced by his mother’s Christian faith and accepted Christ in elementary school, which would immensely impact the rest of his life.
He attended Westmont College, where he met the first love of his life, Katie (Wiebe). While at Westmont he earned a pilot’s license and was encouraged by missionary aviator Nate Saint to use his new hobby for Christian missions work. He and Katie served with Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) for 16 years in Equador, Guyana, Suriname, and Zaire.
Upon returning from the mission field in 1974, the family settled in Newport Beach, California. Roy began purchasing, improving, and managing commercial properties. His passion for providing financial support to Christian mission organizations grew immensely over his lifetime and became the primary focus of his work.
Both on and off the mission field, his creative solutions allowed him to help countless people and organizations beyond what many considered possible. He was quick to encourage and to share any wisdom he had learned, while his playful and mischievous shenanigans kept everyone on their toes.
He and Katie were active members of Mariners Church for decades. Their home was filled regularly with various church groups and the many people they invited in and treated as family. They often travelled, usually in their RV, to visit the many friends they had met over the years.
After 57 years together, Katie passed away. He then found love again and married Patricia (Pat) Rexroat. Roy and Pat were together 9 years before she passed.
Roy loved the Lord. He trusted Him with his whole life and spent his time, talent, and resources serving Him. His life was marked by generosity, wisdom, faithful service, and a deep commitment to the work of God’s Kingdom.
Roy is survived by his children, Royson and wife, Lori, Bruce and wife, Cindy; his 12 grandchildren, David, Erin and husband Mohan, Roman, Kayla and husband Jeff, Emily and husband Spencer, Leanne and husband Cambron, Wesley and wife Sarah; and his 12 (soon to be 13) great grandchildren.
