

Ruth C. Steen, 85, of Corona del Mar, passed away unexpectedly on September 19th. She was born in Los Angeles on March 23rd, 1925 to two doctors, Louis C. Chandler and Mary S. Chandler and was the youngest of four sisters. She lived locally on Balboa Island and in Corona del Mar for the last 55 years where she participated in many altruistic organizations such as the Angelitos de Oro Chapter of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of O.C., Assistance League of Newport Mesa, Jr. League of Newport Harbor and was involved in the founding of the O.C. Performing Arts Center as part of their Camelot Chapter. She also golfed at Newport Beach County Club and La Quinta Country Club and was very active at the Balboa Yacht Club.
She attended Occidental College and UCLA where she met her soon to be husband, Edwin F. Steen, Jr. There she joined Alpha Delta Pi sorority, became a cheerleader and rode on their float in the Rose Bowl Parade in 1947.
Ruth and Ed spent their life together traveling the west coast on their yacht, Truant, and exploring almost all of the United States and Canada on their motorhome, Truant 1. They traveled almost every summer with their children and grandchildren to the mountains of Idaho, enjoyed waterskiing, snow skiing and boating and lived a good life. They were married 62 years. Ed preceded her in passing on Aug. 11th, 2010.
She was a passionate animal lover and enjoyed many artistic hobbies: china painting, embroidery, knitting, sewing and cooking and threw some great parties. Ruth was dynamic and fun, a loving wife and mother and will be truly missed. She is survived by two sisters, Jeannette and Mary Louise; daughter, Lori; son, Edwin III; grandchildren Edwin IV, Amy and Terry; and two great-granddaughters.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 16th at 1:00pm at her home. For information call 949-633-5326.
