Solomon Charnow

July 12, 1928July 29, 2018

LAGUNA WOODS — Solomon Charnow, 90, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 29, 2018 in Laguna Hills, surrounded by his four children. Solomon, known to everyone affectionately as Sol, was a native of Detroit, MI and the son of the late Morris and Pauline Charnow. Sol was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marian Charnow. Also preceding him in death were his two brothers; Charles and Ralph Charnow.

Sol was born July 12, 1928 in Detroit, MI. He graduated from Cass Technical High School and immediately took up his profession as an automotive engineer. It was at his brother’s engagement party that he met the love of his life, Marian. They married in 1951 and were never apart until her death in 1999. Sol’s career spanned forty years and culminated in a management position at Ford Motor Company, where he was a draftsman on the milestone Ford Taurus, and from where he retired in 1990. After retirement, Sol and Marian moved to California where they enjoyed many years together in the sunshine, having endured many Midwest winters.

Sol would say that his greatest achievement was the family he adored. He was a loving son, father, grandfather, husband and uncle and will always be remembered for his kindness, his infectious laugh, his ear to ear smile and his love of a bit of mischief. He had a great many friends but was also a pillar of strength to everyone who was lucky enough to be a part of his life. He was dedicated to his Jewish faith and loved his country, the USA.

Survivors include his four children, Carole Charnow Grainger, Susan Appelbaum, Marc Charnow, and Steve Charnow, their spouses Clive Grainger, Joel Appelbaum, Julie Griesert and Alison Charnow, and his six grandsons whom he adored and to whom he passed on his love of sports, especially baseball: Samuel and Abe Grainger, Adam and David Appelbaum, Benny Charnow and London Charnow. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Katherine Charnow, his nephews William and Michael, nieces Christine and Patrice, their wonderful children, and his friends near and far.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 2nd, from 10:00 am until the graveside funeral services at 11:00 am at Pacific View Memorial Park & Mortuary, 3500 Pacific View Drive, Corona del Mar, CA. A minyan service followed by shiva will take place that evening at 7:00 pm at the home of Sol Charnow.
