Stephen Woodring Bender

Stephen Woodring Bender, 85, of Irvine, California, passed peacefully on the evening of September 17th in the comfort of his home. His daughter and grandchildren stayed by his side leading up to his passing. Stephen was born on April 30th, 1941, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to the late William and Margaret Bender.

Stephen married his first love Dorothy Collins on February 22nd, 1960. They soon built a family together, bearing Christopher in 1962 and Melissa in 1964. He was a passionate lifelong educator. After graduating from Millersville State College in 1963, he started his teaching career at Bethel Park Elementary. In 1968, he relocated his family to sunny Orange County, California. He attended Long Beach State to pursue a master’s degree in education and went on to build a storied career over the following decades as an elementary teacher, district administrator, and reading specialist for Saddleback Valley Unified School District.

He was a voracious reader and was passionate about delicious food and wine – especially a great chardonnay. We will forever cherish the memories centered around the dinner table, both at home and out at Rothschild’s, The Daily Grille, Mimi’s Café, and countless other favorite spots. He also appreciated cars, and those of us who knew Stephen will undoubtedly picture him in his silver 911 Carrera with navy interior.

Stephen is survived by his children, Christopher Bender and Melissa Ehlert-Traub; his grandchildren, Brandon, Makena, and Chrisha; his sister Mary-Louise; his life partner William; his ex-wife Dorothy; and his great-grandson Hank. He was preceded in death by his brother, William.

A graveside memorial service and burial will be held at 3:00 p.m. on September 23rd, at Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona del Mar.

Stephen will be remembered for his gentle soul, subtle humor, patience, and quiet strength he provided to his friends and family. His book of chapters was rich, and we will hold close to its memories.
