Abelina Torres Garza, 95, of Robstown, Texas, gained her wings and was called home to be with our Lord on June 17, 2024. We are saddened by her loss but are brought peace with the knowledge that she is reunited with her husband in heaven.
Abelina was born July 25, 1928 in Robstown, Texas to Flavino Cuevas Torres & Maria Calzada Torres. She was the middle child of nine siblings. She attended school in Driscoll, Texas and after seven years of education, she quit school to work and help her family. She was a strong hard working lady and at a very young age began working as a housekeeper and nanny until she married.
On May 25, 1948, she married Leonel P. Garza. Together they raised three children, Leonel Jr, Amadeo, and Dalia. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. After their marriage, to help support her family, she returned to work as a housekeeper for several years for many prominent families in Alice. She was highly recommended because of her integrity, honesty, and good work ethics. She was later hired by the Retama Nursing Home in Alice as the Housekeeping Supervisor, where she worked until retirement. After retirement she continued to work as a caregiver for a previous employer and her sister-in-law, Tia Prieta. She and her husband then lived out the rest of their years together with their family in Robstown.
She was a loving and caring person who was a devoted Christian with a strong faith in our Lord. She always surrounded her family and friends with unceasing prayer. She was a great cook who enjoyed cooking and baking for her family. She made the best tamales, pan de polvo, bunuelos, cakes, and pies. She was also quite the artisan, loving to do all kinds of crafting such as cake decorating, knitting, crocheting, jewelry making, flower arrangements, macramé, sewing, and homemade blankets. She especially loved to sing and to dance with her husband.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Leonel P. Garza; parents, Flavino & Maria Torres; and siblings: Juan Torres, Consuelo Arredondo, Teresa Alvarado Bustos, Levy Torres, Julian Torres, and Celia Parker.
She is survived by her son, Leonel T. Garza Jr. (Pat); son, Amadeo Garza (Mary Dalia); daughter, Dalia Lozano (JC); grandchildren, Wendy Garza Narvaez (Roland), Raymond Garza (Christina), Omar Lozano (Mary Ann), Eric Garza, George Rodriguez and Matthew Rodriguez; great-grandchildren, Felix Garza, Makayla Garza, Serena Garza, David Jacques, Jazmin Narvaez, Gabrielle Narvaez, Molly Lozano, Anthony Garza, and Mariana Jacques. She is also survived by her brother, Jesse Torres (Juanita) and sister, Julia Zuniga (David), along with numerous nephews and nieces.
The family would like to extend our special thanks and gratitude to Devoted Hospice Healthcare and Windsor Nursing Home in Calallen for all their help, love, and support.
