Alejandro was born on September 23, 1936 in Cabaiguan, Cuba to Ramona Diaz Espinoza, a kindergartener teacher, and Dr. Delfin Gonzalez Espinoza.
He pursued a degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Havana in 1959 following a seven generation tradition of family cattle raising in Cuba.
He met his wife, Elda Berenquer Alvarez, while at the University of Havana and they were married on December 10, 1960.
He loved and was very grateful to the United States for giving him and his family shelter and protection after the communist takeover of his birth country.
