Mom was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on September 8, 1921. Mom and dad, Gilbert G. Fernandez,
were married on February 1, 1946.
Mom attended Cheston Heath Elementary until the 6th grade when she left school to help her mother support the home. Despite the lack of a formal education, she was an intelligent woman, always seeking positive guidance to advance her family and keep them on the “straight and narrow.” Mom raised her six children, and one of her greatest and proudest moments was accomplishing and seeing them through their high school graduation day. Mom continued to support her children by caring for most of her grandchildren until they began school. “Grandma” as the kids called her enjoyed joking with her so they could hear her “sassy, sharper than nail comebacks.” Mom was a strict loving mother and grandmother. We will miss you Mom, but you have left us with wonderful memories that will see us through this difficult time.
Mom was a God fearing woman and a member of Sacred Heart Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and had the wonderful experience of dispensing the Eucharist when Pope John Paul II visited San Antonio, Texas in September of 1987. Mom was also a proud member of the Guadalupanas, and she loved to work in the kitchen assisting with the preparation of the Sunday morning breakfast.
When she wasn’t taking care of children and then grandkids or working with a church related project, she enjoyed crocheting, sewing and taking care of her flowers or making new plants.
Mom is survived by four daughters, Sylvia Garcia, Gloria VanZante (Neal), Gilda Hundley (Ray), Geri Fernandez and two sons, Gilbert Fernandez (Kathie) and George Fernandez ( Dina). Grandchildren are Rebecca, Richard, Robert (Simone) and Erika Garcia (William Quiroz); Jacob (Angie), Robert (Annette), Brian (Renee), and Kyle Hundley (Gina Gonzales); James Fernandez (Blanca Galvan); Jessica Pall (Darrin), Gabriel (Peddy) and Ginger Middleton (John); George J., Victoria, and Anthony Fernandez and Danny Perez (Chris). Mom is also survived by 25 great grandchildren, one great great grand daughter, and her grand doggie XiaoHui, who she referred to as “Wicho” and numerous nieces and nephews from the Diaz and Fernandez families. Mom is survived by a brother Antonio P. Diaz (Lydia) and is predeceased by her parents, Medardo Diaz, Jesusa Peres, and brothers Abelardo and Alfredo Diaz.
Heartfelt thanks to the staff at The Plaza Health Services at Mirador and Christus Spohn South 4th floor Nursing Staff for the touching and special care they provided to our mom.
