Anita Mercado Sanchez

Anita Mercado Sanchez, age 95, was born in Pace, Mississippi on December 28, 1924 and passed away on December 13, 2020.

Anita was a retired homemaker and the loving matriarch of the Sanchez family; she blessed all her relatives and friends with friendship, support, encouragement, wisdom and never-ending love. Her strength and courage through the years set the example that inspired everyone around her in handling the many challenges of life. She taught herself to read and write in both English and Spanish when her children attended school. She was a gifted and self-taught seamstress; her designs included everything from casual wear, to ball gowns to wedding dresses and most without a pattern.

She was a wonderful wife and mother, taking care of her family was her entire focus and happiness. Both of her sons fought in Vietnam, her pride and joy. For this reason the American flag was very sacred to her as was her country, the United States of America. When her grandchildren were born, she lavished them with love and attention as well as every generation of grandchildren that came afterward, all the way to her great-great grandchildren. When her husband became ill, in addition to being a dutiful wife, she became his nurse and closest confidant. After his death, she volunteered several times a week at her local community center, cooking, serving, & sewing. She even joined a ballet Folklorico group where she danced and made costumes for the other women. She lived a blessed and full life; everyone who met her loved her almost instantly. Even though she was very humble, she had a regal and dignified manner that was unmistakably royal.

She had a deep and personal relationship with God and Jesus Christ, her life-long practice of praying a blessing over each of her children, each generation of grandchildren, and family members by name each morning and night is evident in the many answered prayers manifest by her faithfulness.

Anita has been reunited with her parents; siblings; husband, Rufino Justo Sanchez; grandson, Aurelio Jaime Morin and several beloved nieces and nephews.

Left behind to cherish her memory and love are her children, Rufino (Carmen) Sanchez Jr., Esperanza (Aurelio) Morin Jr. and Regino (Lillie) Sanchez; her grandchildren, Sandra (Alan-deceased) Bertrand, Regino (Catherine) Sanchez Jr., Cathy (Michael) Villafuerte, Richard (Elizabeth) Sanchez, Cesar Gutierrez, Robert (Emily) Sanchez, Melissa (Albert) Molina, Sally Kristoff, and Rufino (Kimberly) Sanchez III; 24 great-grandchildren and 16 ½ great-great grandchildren.

Special Thanks: During the last few years of her life, her 3 children rotated 2 weeks at a time to live with her and care for her. A practice almost unheard of in this generation. Rufino & Regino came all the way from Houston, Texas and sacrificed both time and money to make sure she was comfortable and never alone. Esperanza cared for her when it was her turn and because she lived closer, even when it was not her turn, she sacrificed her time, her career and even her health to make sure she was always comfortable and safe. And finally, her beloved granddaughter, Melissa and her great granddaughter, Marissa who were constants in her life, they bathed her, carried her, dressed her, ran her errands, took her to the Dr. and on many outings to keep her entertained and to keep her spirits up. We are so grateful to Rufino, Regino, Esperanza, Melissa & Marissa for their sacrifice of love. Thank you!
