Anna Walter was born on August 19, 1914 in the parsonage of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church at Weesatche, Goliad County, TX. The fourth of five children, Anna’s parents were Missionary-Pastor Gottlieb and Anna Antonie (Papke) Walter. At Anna’s birth, the family had resided in America and Texas for only ten years, having immigrated to America in 1904 from Elbing, West Prussia, Germany, where Gottlieb had served in the mission field, and where Anna Papke’s family lived. Anna was baptized by her pastor father at Weesatche, TX and she was confirmed into the Lutheran church by her father in Wuthrich Hill, Williamson County, TX. Anna met Julius Krieg in 1928 at a church youth social. Julius was from the nearby Swiss community of New Bern. Anna lived at Wuthrich Hill, where her father Pastor Walter was serving the Lutheran church. Julius and Anna were married at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Thrall, Williamson County, TX on June 23, 1932. Anna was very happy to have married into such a large extended family. Julius worked at Krieg Brothers Chevrolet Company in Thrall, and also as manager of the Thrall Cotton Gin for a time, but work was difficult to maintain during the Great Depression. Four sons were born to the couple at Thrall: Melvin, Harvey, Raymond and Dennis. In 1944 the family moved to Corpus Christi, Nueces County, TX. Julius was employed at Humble Oil & Refining Company. Two daughters were born to them, Annamarie and Carol. They joined St. John’s Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, which had a school their sons and a daughter attended. Members of St. John’s from 1944 to 1958, they transferred their membership to Mt. Olive Lutheran in 1958, when Julius and Anna moved to the south side of Corpus Christi. Julius worked for Exxon and retired after 25 years of employment. Julius and Anna were married for fifty-five years. Anna excelled in many skills, being wife, mother, mother-in-law, and later grandmother and great-grandmother. She was beloved by her family and friends, a humble woman who diligently served her family and her Lord, especially through many aspects of homemaking and service to her church. Most importantly, Julius and Anna passed on their strong Lutheran heritage to their children. In 2002 Anna moved to Trinity Towers, Corpus Christi. In 2003 she went to Richardson TX to live near her daughter’s family. She resided at Autumn Leaves of Garland Memory Care facility. From childhood Anna loved and trusted her Lord of Savior Jesus Christ, and she always recognized God’s care of her, especially during her years as a widow. In her final years at Autumn Leaves she was especially well-known for her love of singing – most especially “Jesus Loves Me.” She loved singing hymns and could remember many of them even in her last days. For several years Anna has been a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Plano TX, whose pastors have served her, until her death. Anna was preceded in death by her parents, Pastor Gottlieb and Anna Walter, her brother John Walter, her sisters Lydia Krieg and Mary Cook. One sister Louise Raymond of Killeen, TX survives her. Anna was also preceded in death by her son, Melvin Krieg in 1978, her husband Julius Krieg in 1987, and her granddaughter Susan Hillebrand in 2012. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Harvey and Charlotte Krieg of Houston, TX; Dr. Raymond and Lyla Krieg of Maryville, Tennessee; Dennis and Myong Krieg of Richmond, TX; and Taneko Krieg of Chula Vista, California. Also her daughters and son-in-law, Annamarie and Eddie Kolodziej of Richardson, TX; and Carol Turner of Corpus Christi, TX. Anna would have celebrated her 99th birthday in August.
