Bertha Mendez Chavez

Bertha was born in Cerritos, San Luis Potosi, Mexico to Jose Rito Mendez Escalante and Maria Guadalupe Reyes de Mendez on February 25, 1940. She came to the United States when she married Ruben Chavez in 1963. Her husband for over 62 years. Together they raised four children and made Corpus Christi their home. Bertha dedicated her life to being a faithful, strong, loving mother and wife. She was actively involved in her church and her children’s lives.

She is survived by: Ruben Chavez, her husband, Diana (Chavez) Holland, her daughter, and son-in-law, Sidney Holland, Jose Ruben Chavez, her son, and daughter-in-law, D’Andrea Chavez, Patricia (Chavez) Hernandez, her daughter, and son-in-law, Ryan Hernandez, and Fernando Chavez, her son.

She also leaves to cherish her memory nine grandchildren, Kayla (Holland) Hartnett, Korey Holland, Kelsey Holland, Ruben Joshua Chavez, Cali Hernandez, Brea Hernandez, Kaylee Chavez, Jaden Chavez, and Damien Chavez, and one great grandchild, Kayden Hartnett.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Josefina Mendez de Serrato and Maria Guadalupe Mendez.

A Catholic mass is scheduled for Friday, March 27, 2026 at 2pm, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help with a burial to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. A reception will follow the burial at Memory Gardens Funeral Home, Old Brownsville Rd location.

The family requests that donations be made in lieu of flowers to Susan B Komen Foundation at www.komen.org. The family would also like to thank all for their prayers and that they continue for Ruben Chavez.
