Betty Jo Vela

She was a beloved wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. She is survived by her devoted husband, Fidel, who loved her dearly and cared for her faithfully throughout her illness. His tireless care and unwavering love brought her comfort and peace, and for that, her family will always be deeply grateful.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her father-in-law, Fidel Vela Sr., and her brother-in-law, Arturo “Tudy” Vela. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Lala Vela; sisters-in-law, Gloria Canales (Victor) and Diana Torres; her siblings, Jeanelle Rodgers (George) and Barbara Garza (Hugh); her three children, Gerardo “Jay” Garza (Linda), John Garza (Liliana), and Lori Bonincontri (Mike); and her cherished grandchildren: Gabriella Ramirez, Nathaniel Garza, McKenzie Garza, Eva Garza, Nicholas “Nick” Garza, Elianna Mata, Jerry “Tres” Garza III, John “Johnny” Garza, and Emma Mata. She also leaves behind one great-grandchild, Mateo Valadez, who brought her immeasurable joy.

She built a career at the Corpus Christi Army Depot, where she proudly served in the union and later as a supervisor before retiring. Dedicated and hardworking, she took pride in helping others and making a difference in the lives around her.

After retirement, her family was her greatest blessing. She treasured every moment spent with her children and grandchildren, and those closest to her knew the depth of her love.

She will be remembered for her strength, her devotion to family, and the love she poured into those around her. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit and legacy live on in her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild.

Visitation will be held at Memory Gardens Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with a holy rosary to be held at 7:00 p.m. Continued visitation will be held at Memory Gardens Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 8, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. with a funeral service to be held at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
