Maria Concepcion Barrera, age 87, went to be with the Lord, on February 28, 2022. Concha, as she was called by all that knew her, was born on November 20, 1934 to Celso and Purificacion Guzman. She had very little formal education, maybe 2 years, but she was very good with numbers and was able to manage the family finances competently. Concepcion was a beautiful, loving, caring, confident, generous person who also had a great sense of humor. She was the heart and soul of the family. She showed us how to love, by being patient and seeing the best in people. Everyone knew they could always count on her if they needed a helping hand. She loved her husband and her family very much and enjoyed spending time with them. She especially loved playing with her children to the third and fourth generations. We would see her on the floor playing cars and other pretend games with them.
Concepcion also loved animals. Her favorite animals were humming birds and elephants. She had dogs, cats, and birds as pets. She had a way with animals. She would talk to them and they always seemed attentive. When they would follow her directions she would tell her children, “Look, these animals are more obedient than you," and she would laugh. She would even whistle in the backyard and the birds would fly to her to be fed.
One of her hobbies was going to the Bingos. She could play up to ten cards with no problem. She didn’t' always win but she really enjoyed it. Another hobby was watching her Spanish novelas. You knew not to call her up during a novela because all you get out of her was "ah hah, ah hah".
She also loved to make you laugh. Whatever the situation, there was always laughter at the end. My father would at times tell her, "You don't take anything serious, woman!" Even in her last days she was making us laugh by joking around.
Concepcion was an amazing woman of God. Before her illness she would set aside an hour a day to pray for her family and the world. She was a true prayer warrior.
Concepcion is preceded in death by her son Cesar Barrera, mother Purificacion de Maria Garcia Guzman, father Celso Guzman, brothers: Isidro Guzman, Abdon Guzman, Refugio Guzman, Celso Guzman, Jr., sisters: Felicidad Guzman Chapa, Maria Guadalupe Benavides, Angelica Guzman Jasso, Josefa Guzman, and Socorro Guzman Ortiz.
