Edweina Irene Mikeal, 91, entered eternal rest on August 24, 2022. She was born on February 23, 1931 in Pearsall, Texas to Alfred and Clara Edwards. She was raised in Pearsall, Texas, the oldest of five children. Edweina graduated high school in 1948 and then attended Texas A&I in Kingsville and received her Bachelor of Science degree and her teacher’s certification in 1951. She loved her time at college and often talked about getting to work on the King Ranch in the summers. She absolutely loved it and had many great memories of her time there. Her first teaching job was in Premont, Texas.
On a visit to see her two Aunts who owned a cafe in Holland, Texas she met the love of her life, Richard, who was stationed at Fort Hood Army Base in nearby Killeen, Texas. After a brief courtship and before Richard went overseas they were married on July 14, 1952. Edweina continued to live and teach in Premont, Texas until Richard was discharged from the service in 1953 and they began their married life together in Richard’s hometown of Corpus Christ. In December 1953 they welcomed their oldest daughter, Sherry, and in 1960 their daughter, Tricia. Edweina was a devoted wife and mother and loved to spend time with family. She loved to cook and sew and was a wonderful baker of delicious cakes, cookies, and desserts. She continued to teach elementary school for the next 40 years. She was an excellent teacher and dedicated to making a difference in her student’s lives. She made many lasting friendships through the years. Her career began with her first teaching job at Crossley Elementary and ended at Weldon Gibson (formerly Ebony Acres) where she continued to substitute teach for several more years.
Edweina was a member of West Heights Baptist church for many years. She was very active in the church and loved her church family. She was the church secretary, taught Sunday school and vacation bible school.
Edweina enjoyed attending plays at the Harbor Playhouse, summer trips to Concan and our annual family reunion every fall. In her retirement years she became an avid Spurs fan and especially loved Tony Parker and was thrilled to get to see them play in person a couple of times. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society and loved to play Bunco. She loved and enjoyed many things but her greatest joy came from having her family around her and spending time with her grandchildren. From the time they were born until the end of her life, she was a part of their lives. She was the matriarch of our family and loved by all. Our hearts are full of beautiful memories that we will cherish forever.
Edweina was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Richard, her parents, and her brother, Charlie Edwards.
Edweina is survived by her two daughters, Sherry (Pat) Bradley and Tricia Leal, her granddaughter Stephanie Gomez (Jaime Mesa), Grandsons Jake (Jenny) Persall, Josh (Rachel) Persall, great- granddaughters, Kelsi Curren and Diana Bray, great- grandsons, Charlie Bray, Jordon and Jackson Higginbotham, and her great- great grandson, Kash Curren, her brother Dever (Patsy) Edwards, and her two sisters, Janice Radnor and Donna Cantu; numerous loving nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and extended family.
Having the honor to serve as pallbearers are Jake Persall, Josh Persall, Jaime Mesa, Caplyn Pavelka, Jordon and Jackson Higginbotham.
