Elvira Lopez Cortez, 91, of Corpus Christi, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026. She was born on January 28, 1935, in San Isidro, Texas, to Rosendo Lopez and Isabel Contreras. Elvira was a proud graduate of San Isidro High School and went on to build a life filled with family, faith, hard work, laughter, and love.
Elvira married the love of her life, Israel A. Cortez Sr., and together they built a beautiful family. Throughout her life, Elvira worked in many different career fields, always carrying with her the determination and strength that defined her.
Her faith was an important part of her life. She was a proud member of Divine Mercy and participated in prayer groups, where she found comfort, friendship, and fellowship.
Elvira found joy in the simple things in life. She loved playing dominoes and chalupa, watching telenovelas, baking, dancing, and sewing. She was especially known for her wonderful cooking and for passing down family traditions. She lovingly taught her family how to make tortillas and tamales—lessons that will live on through the generations.
Those who knew Elvira will remember her for her laughter, love, and grace. She always had a joke to tell, even when the joke wasn’t very funny—and somehow, that only made everyone laugh harder. Her personality could light up a room, and her warmth made people feel loved and welcomed.
Elvira’s greatest joy was her family. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of memories, traditions, faith, and unconditional love that will continue through all those who were blessed to know her.
Elvira was preceded in death by her parents, Rosendo Lopez and Isabel Contreras; her beloved husband, Israel A. Cortez Sr.; and her children, Cesar Cortez and Dora Pilkington.
She is survived by her Beloved sister Elena Garza, her son, Israel Cortez (Virginia); her grandchildren, Steven Cortez (Valeri), April Cortez, Israel III, and Kamryn Cortez (Scotty); numerous cousins; and many great-grandchildren, along with countless family members and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
The family would like to extend a special and heartfelt thank you to everyone who was there for Elvira during the last few months of her life. Your love, kindness, presence, and support meant more than words can express. We are also deeply grateful to the many healthcare providers who cared for Elvira and gave their time, compassion, and endless efforts.
A special thank you is also extended to her church family, prayer group, and friends for the love, prayers, companionship, and comfort they provided throughout her life.
Though our hearts are heavy with her passing, we find comfort knowing that Elvira’s love and laughter will continue to live on in every family recipe, every tortilla and tamale made from the traditions she taught us, every game of dominoes and chalupa, every story, every joke, and every memory shared.
Her life was a gift. Her love was a blessing. Her memory will live forever.
Rest peacefully, Grandma Elvira. You will be deeply missed and forever loved.
Visitation will be held at Funeraria Del Angel, 4901 Everhart Road, Corpus Christi, TX 78411, US, on September 1, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, with a Rosary at 7:00 pm.
A Funeral Mass will take place at Saints Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church, 3210 S Padre Island Dr, Corpus Christi, TX 78415, US, on September 2, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by Burial at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 8200 Old Brownsville Road, Corpus Christi, TX, at 11:30 am.
