Jorge, “George,” Luis Barrera met our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 11, 2025. In the sixty-two years between his birth and his death, George, father, brother, uncle, son, and friend, made a life doing and being the best that he could.
George was born as the 6th of 8 children on December 23,1962 in Corpus Christi, Texas to Otalia and Manuel Barrera. Though he spent most of his professional work life as an oil field mechanic, George dedicated himself tirelessly as a public servant serving as a West Oso ISD Board Trustee from 1991-1995, and again from 2007-2011. There, he played an integral role in the construction of the West Oso Bear Football Stadium, the new West Oso High School, and the new John F. Kennedy Elementary School. During his tenure as the School Board President and as an avid sports fan, George proudly witnessed the West Oso Bears Boys Basketball team’s historic run as they won their first ever State Championship title. These professional victories gave George a great sense of achievement, and he delighted in reminding the Coastal Bend what Oso Pride is all about.
Beyond executive performance, George’s greatest triumph was his role as a father, brother, son, and friend. He is survived by his two children: son, Jorge Luis Barrera Jr., and daughter, Tessa Arleen Barrera; and his siblings: Alonzo Barrera, Nena Luna, Manuel Barrera, Mario Barrera, Lydia Salgado and Joel Barrera. He is preceded in death by his sister Anna Maria Rodriguez and parents Manuel and Otalia Barrera.
George’s dry humor, consistency, and his wealth of knowledge in the areas of politics, Texas history, and pop culture made every conversation more interesting and entertaining.
Public visitation will be held at Memory Gardens Funeral Home on Friday, March 21, 2025 at 5:00 pm with a Rosary at 7:00 pm. A Catholic Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at Our Lady of Pilar Catholic Church. Services will conclude at the church.
