George Rodriguez Jr. entered into the loving arms of Our Lord on August 14, 2026 at the tender age of 78. He was born in Raymondville, Texas on December 11, 1947 to parents, Hilaria Ortiz and George Rodriguez. He was a proud patriot, a devoted father and grandfather, and a man whose playful spirit could light up any room. He lived a life filled with service, adventure, family, music, and a deep appreciation for the country he proudly served.
George entered the United States Army on May 31, 1966, beginning a military career that would take him across the world and through some of the most significant moments of his generation. He served in Vietnam and was stationed in Germany, New York, Dallas, and Japan. George worked with Black Hawk helicopters and was also stationed at a base during Desert Storm. His dedication and courage earned him numerous honors, including the Bronze Star, Silver Star, Medal of Valor, Purple Heart recognition, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and recognition for his 100 percent service-connected disability. For George, military service was more than a chapter in his life—it was a part of who he was. He was a true patriot who took great pride in his country and in the years he spent serving it. He carried those experiences with him throughout his life, always recognizing the honor and sacrifice that came with wearing the uniform.
Away from his military life, George was happiest outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, and simply being outside, where he could enjoy the freedom and adventure that came naturally to him. He was a Dallas Cowboys fan and proudly followed his team, always ready to cheer them on. Music was another great source of joy for George. Tejano and country music filled his life, and he especially loved to dance. A good song could bring out his playful side, and he had an infectious personality that made it difficult for those around him not to smile and join in the fun.
George's greatest pride was his family. His daughter held a special place in his heart, and becoming a grandfather brought him a kind of happiness that was difficult to put into words. His heart seemed to bloom whenever he was with his granddaughter. Of all the names he carried throughout his life, one became his favorite of all: Popo. It was the name his granddaughter gave him, and he wore it with a special kind of pride. Being her Popo was more than a title—it was a role he cherished, one that brought out his tenderness, his playfulness, and the immense love he had for her.
George will be reunited in heaven with his parents, Hilaria “Lala” and George Rodriguez, nephew, Eric Rodriguez; and in-laws, Jesusa and Gilbert Rivas.
His legacy and memory will forever live in his loving wife, Mary Ann Rodriguez; daughter, Krystle and Julian Barboza; granddaughter, Aria Faith Barboza; sisters-in-law, Belinda Ochoa (Roel) and Norma Rodriguez (David Hinojosa); brother-in-law, Ruben Rivas; brother-in-heart; Armando Rodriguez; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. George will be remembered as a man who served his country with courage, loved his family fiercely, and never lost his ability to have fun. He was strong yet playful, proud yet warm, adventurous yet happiest when surrounded by the people he loved.
The Rodriguez family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to the nurses and staff with Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veteran Home for all the special care that was given to George. As well as the staff in McAllen with United Health Hospice for their support and guidance throughout this time.
Visitation will be held at Funeraria Del Angel, 4901 Everhart Road, Corpus Christi, TX 78411, US, on August 24, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, with a Prayer Service at the same location on August 24, 2026, at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue at Funeraria Del Angel on August 25, 2026, from 9:00 am to 10:00 am. A Committal Service will be held at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery, 9974 I-37, Corpus Christi, TX 78410, US, on August 25, 2026, at 11:00 am.
