

Horace H. Johnson, Jr., former resident of Corpus Christi, Tx, passed away January 6 at the Stone Oak Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, at the age of 93. Mr. Johnson was born in Slaton, Texas on July 30, 1923 to Horace Howard and Effie Tucker Johnson. He attended high school in Eagle Pass, Tx. Johnson began working at an early age for the NYA Camp (National Youth Administration). On October 1,1942 he joined the Army Air Corp where he eventually became a right waist gunner with the famous Flying Tigers during WWII. After leaving the military in October, 1945, he was trained in the sheet metal trade. In 1973, he opened his own business, Johnson Metal Fabricators. He operated the business until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union. Horace was married to Allene Johnson in Harlingen, Texas on September 29, 1945. They had a son, Wendell Ray Johnson, on September 14, 1946 and a daughter, Cheryl Lynn Johnson, on December 8, 1949. Johnson was active in the Boy Scouts where he served as Scout Master. He built three rowboats and a canoe for the scouts to use and took them camping once a month to places from Big Bend National Park to Mustang Island. He took his scouts to the yearly Scout-a-Rama in Corpus Christi. He taught them many skills including first aide, camping, cooking, survival and many other outdoor skills. Hobbies he enjoyed were walking laps at Sunrise Mall with friends, boating, fishing, gardening, jigsaw puzzles, and traveling with friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, Charles and Jerry; and his wife of 67 years, Allene Johnson. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Ballentine; his son, Wendell Johnson and wife Sherry; his daughter, Cheryl Parr; grandchildren, Justin and Kimberly Parr; and Randy Davis; and great granddaughter, Madelyn Davis. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Corpus Christi Botanical Gardens or to the charity of your choice. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 13, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Memory Gardens Funeral Home located at 8200 Old Brownsville Rd, Corpus Christi, TX, with a Funeral Service to follow at 2:00 p.m. Entombment will follow at Memory Gardens Mausoleum.
