Isidro Guzman, Jr. went to be with Our Lord on November 12, 2016. He was born in Beeville, Texas on July 20, 1945. He was a graduate of Miller High School (1962 salutatorian), Del Mar College and the University of Texas (UT) where he received a B.S. degree in Mathematics and an M.S. in Library Science. He worked as a library cataloger at UT Austin, UT Pan Am Edinburg, TAMU Corpus Christi and TAMU Kingsville. He was a quiet, unassuming individual who was highly intelligent, loved to play tennis and Scrabble, loved traveling and loved music. He often said he was grateful he found the only sport for him, tennis. He enjoyed playing Scrabble on his DOS computer, and loved to play (most of the time beat) his sister Mary. He made a four month trip throughout Europe and he made trips to London every other year for a while because he loved to attend Broadway plays and opera. He visited Mary (and husband John) wherever the military sent them, including Venezuela. Isidro hosted and participated in Sunday afternoon board games with a small group of friends for about 30 years.
Isidro was a man of quiet but deep faith who started his walk by reading and taking to heart the Imitation of Christ by Tomas A. Kempis. He served others well and others served him in his process of fighting the debilitating ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease. We are grateful to his many caregivers and in particular to Eloisa, Estella, Paula and Alicia, who served him and loved him through the process. We are grateful to the Aadi Home Health and Hospice divisions, Dr. Boynton and his staff, Dr. Jackson in San Antonio UT Health Science Center and her team, and Steve Morse of the ALS Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alicia and Isidro, and infant brother, Mark Anthony.
He is survived by his sister, Mary (John) Fernandez; niece, Monica (Joseph) Deleon and nephew, Daniel (Tammy) Fernandez; grand-nieces, Charis, Courtney and Kayla; grand-nephews Ben, Jacob and Luke, many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Faithful small group friends, James Autry (best friend), Paul and Mary Hoffman, and new friend, Miss Dot continued to meet for Sunday afternoon games throughout his journey with ALS. Tennis friends Pete Cancino and Michel Mullet and others visited him during his time with ALS.
Tuesday, November 15, 2016, visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. with vigil/rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. at Cage Mills Funeral Home, 4901 Everhart Road. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 11:00 a.m., at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 7522 Everhart Road, with the Rite of Christian Burial to follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Association.
