Joe R. Selby

Joe R. Selby was born in Corpus Christi to Dudley and Mildred Selby.  He grew up in Harlingen and moved to Corpus Christi in time to graduate from W.B. Ray in 1957.  One of Joe’s loves was writing.  He graduated from University of Texas, Austin with a degree in Journalism.  His first job in that field was with the Caller Times but the Army called and he went to Germany.  After getting his Honorable Discharge Joe stayed in Germany to work for the Red Cross.  While in Germany he met and married the love of his life, Elvira Wiegand.  Most of his career he served as a civilian employee of the Department of Defense.  He came back to Corpus Christi in 1999 to serve as an Executive Director of MWR for NAS Corpus Christi. After retiring in 2001, Joe devoted his time to reading, fishing, writing and visiting with friends.  In May 15, 2013, after a fierce battle with cancer, Joe passed away at his home surrounded by love.  He is survived by the love of his life, Elvira, his children, Eric and Tanya, his granddaughter Ellen, his sisters Dee Baggett and Barbara McCormick and several nieces and nephews.
