

He was born on January 27, 1933 to Carlos and Maria Luisa De La Garza in Corpus Christi, Texas.
He proudly served in the Army National Guard and the United States Air Force.
He was a veteran of the Korean War. After military service, John worked as a Federal Government employee until his retirement. He continued his public service at Del Mar College where he worked for the Special Populations Department as an advocate for students with special needs and as a strong supporter of higher education. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and a past Assistant State Director of the American Association of Retired Persons.
He is survived by his loving wife Lydia, with whom he shared fifty-three years of marriage; and his children, Theresa (Edward), John (Joanna), Eric (Christine), Aaron (Faith); his sister, Sylvia West; his grandchildren, Victoria, Elijah, Christian,
Noah, Michael, Stephen, and John Ryan; as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Friday, August 12, 2011 at Cage-Mills Funeral Directors, 4901 Everhart, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. that same evening. A mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 13, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park.
