Jose Nunez Plata was called home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 11th, 2020.

Mr. Plata was born September 12th, 1927 in Laredo, Texas to Canuto Plata and Maria Munoz Plata.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Brother Juan Hernandez Jr, Sisters Carmen Rodriguez, Maria Elena Contreras and son Jose Plata Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Alida Cerda Plata, daughters, Criselda Plata Hernandez, Sandra Plata, Alida Plata Moore and husband, Tom, Jesusita Guel; sons David Plata, Ubence Guel, Hector Plata and wife, Alicia. Jose was truly blessed to spend time with fifteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Jose’s selfless service began when he joined the US Army’s 54th Engineer Battalion in 1951. He was awarded the Army Occupational Medal for his duty and served in the Korean War. He loved telling the stories of his experiences from around the world. Army values such as discipline and hard work made it a seamless transition from protecting and serving his country to protecting and serving his community. He coached numerous after school programs including baseball to countless youth from surrounding areas throughout the years, as well as his main passion as a Boxing coach at the Westside Boxing Club and Ben Garza Recreation Center. He instilled the work ethic and tough love from the military upon everyone he coached. He did all this while working full time as a roofer for Sechrist-Hall Roofing Company.

I remember Mr. Plata as being the kindest man I knew. He trained me as a boxer when I was young and I can remember seeing his eyes light up when we'd bring home those team trophies. He will forever be in our hearts. My condolences to his family, friends, and the boxing community. Thank you for your service sir.

Mr. Plata was a good man. He was my boxing coach, and friend. I wish I could thank him for all the countless hours and efforts he put into training me and many others. At the time, I was too young to realize he did this out of the kindness of his heart and not for profit. He organized using a facility at a fence company and put together a gym where we trained. He never asked anything from us other than being on time for practice and consistency. He was there day after day after he got off work from his regular job and stayed there with us until sometimes 8 or 9 o’clock at night Monday through Friday. He was a remarkable man that words cannot describe. He has forever impacted my life through the values and dedication I learned from him. I hope to one day pass on what Mr. Plata taught me. God bless you my teacher on your next journey. Until we meet again, rest in peace.
