

Dr. Juanita “Janie” Calderon Ojeda-De La Cruz, 84, passed peacefully in her home September 25, 2021 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Mrs. De La Cruz was born on April 25, 1937 to Sostenes Calderon and Carlos Ojeda in Oilton, Texas. She was raised in Oilton, Texas and graduated valedictorian from Bruni High School in 1958. In 1963, she graduated from Texas A&I in Kingsville, Texas, with a bachelor's in education. In subsequent years, she obtained her master's in counseling and finally her PhD in education, also from the same university. She was successfully employed by Corpus Christi Independent School District for 39 years and served as a diagnostic psychologist for the district; she retired in 2002.
She married Luciano "Chano" De La Cruz, Sr. on October 31, 1966, her husband of 54 years and they raised one son. Janie moved to Corpus Christi in 1963.
She was an avid bowler, having started in 1972 with the Dos Aguilas League which took her and Chano to various cities including Mexico City. Her bowling career lasted until 2019.
Janie enjoyed traveling with stops in Buenos Aires, London, Paris, Madrid, Athens, Rome, Lisbon to name a few. In addition, she traveled to various US cities on both the East and West Coasts. She also participated in seventeen USS Halsey Powell reunions.
She is preceded in death by her parents, four brother, and one sister.
Janie is survived by her husband Chano, Sr. and son Luciano Jr., as well as one grandchild, brother Manuel C. Herrera.
*Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Monday, October 18, 2021 at Funeraria Del Angel-Everhart, 4901 Everhart Road, Corpus Christi, Texas with Holy Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 19, 2021, at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church followed by Interment at Coastal Bend State Veteran's Cemetery, 9974 I.H. 37, Corpus Christi, Texas at 1:00 p.m.
