Larry was born on January 17, 1955, in Fort Stockton, Texas to Edward and Wilda “Corky” Anderwald. He was raised in Harlingen, TX, where his family owned a Cessna dealership. From a young age, he was known for his tireless work ethic. As a teenager, he split time between mowing lawns and working in his father’s hangar, saving enough money to special order a 1971 Camaro SS!
A 1973 graduate of Harlingen High School, Larry met the love of his life, Sandy Artz, in 1978 while they were both working at the new local hot spot, Pelican’s Wharf. It didn’t take long for Larry to impress Sandy with his bartending flair, and they married in 1979. A year later, they welcomed their first son, Clay, and opened their first restaurant, Ludwig’s Garden, igniting the beginning of Larry’s lifelong passion for the food industry. They opened a second Ludwig’s in McAllen, Texas, before he went to work for Labatt food service in San Antonio, Texas, in 1985. A year later, along with the arrival of their second son Drew, Larry was transferred to Corpus Christi where his career began to flourish, building the foundation for a successful sales territory. In 1988, their third son, Spencer was born. In 1999, he was recruited by Ben E. Keith food service, where he advanced to District Sales Manager and earned the prestigious DSM of the Year award twice. He later served as Business Development Manager and retired in 2022.
Concurrently, from 1986 to present, the Anderwalds opened and operated a number of unique businesses, including “Ed’s Wood Co.” (1986 - 1999), various seasonal retail kiosks in Padre Staples Mall (1999 - 2001), “The Frosty”, an iconic hamburger and malt shop in Woodsboro, Texas (2000 - 2011), “The Grill at Brewster Street” (inside Brewster Street Icehouse in Corpus Christi, Texas) (2006 - 2021)
With family partners they opened “Distance Brothers Services” and “Anderwald Holdings” (2011-present). With business partners the “CC Turnkey” group of entities was founded, encompassing “The Courtyard at Gaslight Square”, “Diamond Point Catering”, “Alloy Café”, “Gallery 41 Water’s Edge Grille” and coming soon, “5th & Elm” in Portland, Texas (all from 2008 - present).
Aside from a long list of professional achievements, Larry was most proud of the many talented individuals he identified and mentored to their own successes over the years. His legacy is defined not only by the businesses he built, but by the countless lives he touched through leadership, generosity, and friendship.
Larry loved being on the water whether fishing, boating, or simply spending time near the coast with his family and beloved grandchildren. His presence will be deeply missed and his spirit forever cherished.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and “Corky” Anderwald; and brother, David Anderwald.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Sandra Artz Anderwald; three sons, Clay (Danika), Drew (Debbie) and Spencer (Kelsey); seven grandchildren, Colton, Dash, Claire, Dakota, Delilah, Madeline, and Demi - Rose; and sister, Lynette Anderwald Drake.
