Leonor R. Martinez, 88, passed away on March 5, 2011 at the home of her daughter after a prolonged illness. She was born on November 6, 1922 in Elm Mott, Texas to Flavio and Primitiba (Perez) Romero but grew up in Waco, Texas. She was married to Macario Martinez for sixty-seven years and was one month short of celebrating their sixty-eighth wedding anniversary.
Prior to her illness, Leonor had been an active parish member at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church and a volunteer worker at the Benedictine Abbey in Sandia, Texas. She enjoyed recalling the numerous activities that she participated in at the church and the abbey. Later, as a result of her physical limitations, she was unable to attend mass and was most grateful to the St. Paul parishioners, priests, and deacons who visited and prayed with her at her home.
Leonor was preceded in death by her sons, Frank and Flavio Martinez; a grandson, Danny; two granddaughters, Christy and Monica; as well as her mother, father, four brothers, and one sister.
She is survived by her husband, Macario; her children, Macario Martinez, Jr. (Susan), Jesse Martinez (Ruby), Linda Keller; her daughter-in-law, Phyllis Martinez; one brother, Frank Romero (Carol) of Houston, Texas; and one sister, Consuelo Cantu of Waco, Texas. Leonor’s grandsons, Rodney, Michael, Jesse Rene (Jessica), Mack (Yvonne), Mark (all Martinez), and William Fejeran, Jr., will serve as pallbearers. She has two granddaughters, Michelle Pantoja (Frank), Melinda Aranda (Edward); and thirteen great grandchildren. Additional survivors include numerous nieces and nephews from Corpus Christi, Waco, and Houston.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at Cage-Mills Funeral Directors, 4901 Everhart Road with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m., that same evening. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 2233 Waldron Road. Entombment will follow at Seaside Memorial Park.
