OBITUARY

Macaria "Mickey" G. Ortiz

November 2, 1927April 13, 2020

On Monday, April 13, 2020, Macaria Gonzalez Ortiz, or Mickey as she liked to be called, was called home to be with the Lord in heaven, at the age of 92.

Mickey was born in rural Corpus Christi on November 2, 1927. Fondly remembered as part of the greatest Generation, she met her husband Francisco, during the World War II era. Starting in the sixties, Mickey acquired her LVN and practiced nursing for over 50 years till she retired in 2008.

Mickey had a passion for nursing, which was witnessed in her practicing her profession for over 50 years. Mickey will forever be remembered as loving to dance and hear music. Mickey also loved to attend the bingo hall every night or travelling the world, especially to different casinos.

Mickey was also involved with the American Legion and the VFW. She was an avid bowler and even participated in several soft-ball leagues. All other friends and relatives knew her as the “fun lady”, with a different array of hats and cowboy boots at all the family parties and get-togethers. She might have been little, but she was known as being the life of the party, wherever she went.

Mickey was preceded in death by her husband, Franciso Ortiz and her loving daughter Annie Cortez. She is survived by her sons Ramon (Guadalupe) Ortiz, Francisco (Linda) Ortiz, Jesus (Virginia) Ortiz, and Roberto (Ana) Ortiz, and her son-in-law Daniel Cortez. Mickey had sixteen grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

My great grandmother Mickey was the best of us, strong, independent, hardowrking, and fun. It's hard seeing someone I've known my whole life pass, but the memories she left are irreplaceable. I'll never forget the times when she'd steal me away from the family and take me to a movie in her red truck. I'll always remember the summer she lived down the road from us on Lansdown, and my cousin Giobanca and I would go walk to her house where she would give us sodas and grapefruit. I'll miss her dearly, but the impression she left with me will last another lifetime. I Love you grandma Mickey, forever.

I am deeply sorry for the loss of such a wonder“ LADY “(La•dy : A woman of superior social position) And she was indeed all of that. I remember Grandma Mickey being the light of the party coming in and had this great big smile 😃 on her face with that ever so fabulous Corvette RED lipstick and the HATS who can forget her signature STYLE. She was always so spunky and fun to be around I can’t say I ever seen her mad or with a frown. Being around her for me showed me that women do not have to be dependent she showed me just how good Independent is! She was stylish, hip and never skipped a beat how lucky is the Ortiz family to have had such an amazing women has one of the most important branches of their family tree. Grandma Mickey although you weren’t my grandmother by blood , you my dearest where my family and I will forever be greatful to have had the opportunity to be raised around such an awesome individual as yourself. Thank you for all the memories and thank you for your 50 years of servicing so many people in healthcare . May you forever rest in heavenly peace until we meet again~Nelly~

As I sit here reflecting on all the moments that I shared with my grandmother there is only one that comes to the forefront of my memory. I was around six and grandma and me were in the kitchen at the old Harvard house. I was helping her cut this huge watermelon (well it was huge to a six year old) and my face was covered in watermelon juice and seeds. We had so much fun that day and the picture I have of the both of us together absolutely shows the joy on both of our faces.
I love you grandma and you will be missed, but I will always carry that memory with me. Rest in peace, until we meet again.
