Marcella June Slough, affectionately known as “Nanny” by her family, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2025, in Corpus Christi, Texas, at the age of 91. She was born on January 10, 1934, to Earl and Flora Campbell in St. Joseph, Missouri. A proud graduate of Benton High School, she launched a life filled with faith, family, music, and service to others.
Her early years were marked by a vibrant musical talent that led her to work as a musician for KCMO Radio and as a switchboard and PBX operator. A gifted singer and choir director, Marcella’s love of music was matched only by her Catholic faith. Throughout her life, she remained active in the Catholic Church, participating in women’s groups and music ministries in the parishes where she was a devoted member. Marcella had a passion for life’s simple joys: cheering on her favorite teams—especially the Kansas City Chiefs, Texas A&M Aggies, Notre Dame Fighting Irish and LSU Tigers—cooking for her loved ones, decorating for Christmas, and enjoying her garden. She had a particular fondness for cars and often dreamed of owning a baby blue Volkswagen convertible. Her home was a place of love and laughter, often filled with the noise of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even a great-great-grandchild. She treasured her family above all else and was famous for her quick wit and her signature phrase, “Damn Sam,” which never failed to bring a smile.
Marcella was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Earl Tim Campbell Jr.; her sister, Mildred Park; her first husband, James R. McEnulty; her second husband, Ira J. Slough, Jr.; and her nephews, Timmy Park and Chuck Mauzey.
She is survived by her loving children, Loretta Joan McEnulty, Joseph Richard McEnulty (Deborah), Teresa Louise McEnulty, and Jacqueline Sue McEnulty. She also leaves behind a large extended family who brought her immense joy: her grandchildren, Kirk Ammerman, Alex Ammerman, Jennifer Wilkes, Steven Flores (Teresa), James Burdett (Lindsay), Paul Sanderford, Laura Hazard (Greg), James Robert Flores (Rhianna), Christi Briggs (Jim), Jessica Burdett (Faith), Aimee Sanchez (Brandon), Kathryn Holly Smith (Ethan), Michael James “MJ” Richenberg, and Sarah Michelle Richenberg (Jeremiah); 34 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her niece, Aurelia Mauzey; nephews, Robert Campbell (Cheryl) and Randy Campbell; great Nieces Gail Goins and Tami Sims-Davis. Special friends of Nanny - Nia Bunch, Jimmy Rodriguez, Rose Vatzlavick, Diane Routh (Micheal), Linda Olson, Mary Fiscus, Cheryl Engelsman, Becky Lyman, Stirling Thomas, AJ Glidden, Angel McCreles, KanDenise Waters, Kenneth Wilkes; previous sons-in-law Francis Burdett, Amador Flores; and she is preceded in death by son-in-law, Michael Richenberg.
Marcella’s presence filled a room, her laughter lit it up, and her love anchored generations. She was a mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend—but most of all, she was home. Her memory will forever live on in the music she sang, every Chiefs game, the faith she lived, Holiday gatherings (especially Christmas) and the countless lives she touched.
