She was born to Margarito and Oralia Cuevas on August 25, 1958 in Corpus Christi, Tx . Maria graduated from Roy Miller High School. Soon after, she met her husband Martin Abrego Sr. They spent 39 loving years together and were blessed with three children.
Maria loved her Saturday mornings going garage sales, and having breakfast at Santa Rosa. Martin can attest that she could always get a bargain. She started taking her grandchildren to garage sales and thrift stores passing down what she loved. Maria taught the children how to bargain and turn someone else’s trash into treasure. She had a hack for arts and crafts as well as a baker’s hand. She was known for her great tasting banana nut bread. Her family waited in high anticipation for fall, as that's when she started her baking. The neighbors on the block also enjoyed her baked goods and she loved to share it with them. It was not the only thing she shared, it was well known that she would always give a hand to anyone who needed her help.
Maria had many hobbies and was a fun loving partygoer. Her dancing song was the Cupid shuffle, whenever it came on, you knew Maria would be out there dancing. She had tremendous fun dancing to the Cupid Shuffle, but her favorite song was “We are family”. Maria’s favorite and most joyous moments was spending time with her fourteen grandchildren which included anywhere from decorating Christmas ornaments to showing them baby pictures from her 100s of photo albums. She absolutely adored her family, especially beloved husband, Martin.
Maria is preceded in death by her parents, Margarito Cuevas Sr., and Oralia P. Cuevas; brothers, Roberto Cuevas, Ricardo Cuevas, and Margarito Cuevas Jr.
She is survived by her husband Martin Abrego Sr.; three children Martin (Heidi) Abrego Jr., Marcos (Christina) Abrego, and Isabel (Eloy) Torres.; sisters, Guadalupe Maria Cuevas, Cathi (Bubba) Ortiz and brother Ruben (Rachel) Cuevas.
