Maria Elvia Vargas

Maria Elvia Vargas peacefully passed away at her home surrounded by love on November 29, 2024 at the age of 84. She was born on June 26, 1940 to the late Jose and Valeriana Casas in Benavides, Texas. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Elvia was a devoted Catholic and avid believer in Christ and the Virgin Mary. She was an amazing human being, beloved mother, grandmother, and sister.

She was everything to everyone! She welcomed anyone with open arms. She gained additional children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren with her heart of Gold. She loved to travel when she could and spending time with her family. On her spare time she enjoyed playing games, bird watching and taking care of her plants. Her most notable skill was her famous pan de polvo cookies, potato salad, pan de campo and pistachio salad to name a few.

She is reunited with her parents; and her beloved son, Reynaldo Vargas; her sisters, Hermlinda Casas, Ester Casas, Graciela Casas; and great-great grandchildren Carlos Chavira and Axton Irigoyen.

Elvia leaves to cherish her memories her children, Rosalia Lopez, Rene Vargas (Nireza), Richard Vargas, Roxanne Vargas, Rachel Vargas and Steven Lopez; grandchildren, Joshua (Paula) Vargas, Joseph Vargas, Manuela Lopez, Laura Lopez, Daniel Lopez, Michael (Denise) Vargas, David Vargas, Rosemary (Jacob) Aery, Rosalinda (Gus) Urrea, Vanessa (David) Gonzalez, Desirae Richard, Amanda Rodriguez, Darlene Hernandez; 14 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren; and 8 great-great grandchildren. She also leaves her siblings, Sylvia (Tino) Cisneros, Olga (Raul) Castillo, Joe (Clarice) Casas, Idalia (Martin) Garcia and a host of extended family and friends.

Family will receive friends at Memory Gardens Funeral Home on Monday, December 9, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. A Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. that same evening.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Corpus Christi Cathedral Catholic Church on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. Services will conclude in the church. She will be laid to rest at Memory Gardens Cemetery at a later date.
