Narciso, better known as Cisco, was born February 22,1933 in Odem, Texas, the first child of four to Narciso Mendez, Sr. and wife, Delores. As a young boy, Cisco moved with his family to Corpus Christi, Texas, later graduating from Roy Miller High School. A few years later, it was through a mutual friend, that he met the love of his life, Virginia Gomez. With the help and approval of her sisters, Virgie snuck out her back window and married Cisco on March 3, 1953. He joined the U.S. army shortly thereafter and served two years. The two love birds were blessed with three children: Arnold, Mike and Cindy. In 1959, Cisco weighted his pockets with rolls of quarters, and filled his stomach with bananas to make weight for the firefighting academy. He was successful and began his 40 years of service in the Corpus Christi Fire department, where he served and retired as Captain
Cisco was a jovial, big-hearted and generous man, loved by his family and those who had the privilege of knowing him. He was known for giving strangers the shirt off his back and the shoes from his closet. His giving knew no limits. He excelled in many things: tennis, hunting, firefighting, real estate and poker, yet remained humble, and devoted to God. He saved his pride for his family, whom he adored and constantly reminded through poetry and words how much they were loved.
Cisco and Virgie celebrated 69 years of marriage, with constant devotion to each other, especially Virgie’s dedication to Cisco’s care in his final months. Together, they enjoyed dancing, traveling, entertaining friends and family, and spoiling their 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren with love.
