Ova Raye Edwards

Ova Raye Marrs Edwards, age 95, passed away Friday, March 12, 2021 at the Matagorda Nursing Home in Bay City, TX. She was born October 13, 1925 to Emmitt Ray and Ora Mae (Anderson) Marrs in Goldbusk, Texas. She was raised in Talpa, Texas where she graduated from Talpa High School in 1943. She attended Business School in Missouri. After completion of Business School she moved to Austin, Texas and then worked several years for the Department of Public Safety and the Hitching Post Restaurant. She met the love of her life, Jack Edwards and they married shortly after on September 19,1947. They remained married until Jack passed away April 8, 2015. Ova Raye remained married until she passed away this year.
They adopted three sons, Dewitt Douglas, William Charles “Chuck,” and Lonnie Leon “Lee”. They had five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; Ova Raye had a daughter-of-the-heart, Martha Kinchloe and a grandson-of-the-heart, Justin Kinchloe, along with many other loved ones and friends.
While Ova Raye enjoyed being a homemaker, Jack was in business with his partner, Richard Hill, operating as “Edwards and Hill Painting Company,” from which he retired in 1986. They loved to travel and to fish. Jack and Ova Raye lived most of their lives in Corpus Christi and they owned a cabin on an Island in Lagoona Bay, where they loved to have family and friends visit them and enjoy the fishing, and great food. Ova Raye did beautiful hand-work with ceramics and painting. She also loved gathering with family for reunions, and she loved playing dominoes, especially 42.
After Jack retired from his painting company they moved to Sargent where they enjoyed fishing out their days on Caney Creek and the Gulf of Mexico.
Ova Raye Edwards is survived by; sister-in-law, Hildred “Hilly” McCullogh of Pasadena; three daughter-in-laws, Jewel Edwards of Hayden, AL and Pat Garretson of Nebraska, Terri Edwards of Brazoria; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, loved ones and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband Jack; three sons, Dewitt, Chuck, and Lee; four sisters: Bertha Weeks and husband, John of Mississippi; Melba Cox and husband, Tyrus of Austin, Texas; Wanda Stucke and husband, Fowler of Odessa, Texas; Fredna Moore and Elton of Bronte, Texas; a nephew, Emmitt Moore of Midland, Texas; and a niece, Lisa Moore of Snyder, Texas; Brother-in-laws, Pete, Billy, Johnny, Henry; and two sister-in-laws Mildred Haring and Wilma Kirby, and many other loved-ones.
The family would like to thank Martha Kinchloe and her son, Justin for the many years of love and care they gave to Momma-Raye. The family would also like to thank Funeraria Del Angel Funeral Home of Corpus Christi, Texas for their great care these past few days. Ova Raye Edwards was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. A short viewing for Ova will be held at 9:30 A.M. on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at The Palms Memorial Gardens, 4335 County Road 3567, Portland, TX 78374.
