Rebecca Estrada Edwards, 96, of Corpus Christi, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2023. She was surrounded by family and friends and is reunited with her devoted husband of 56 years, George G. Edwards.
On October 16, 1926, Rebecca was born in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, to Felipe and Herlinda Estrada. As an infant, her family moved to Corpus Christi. With a limited formal education, everyone was amazed with her self-taught knowledge of education, government, politics, and the environment. When it came to religion, she could recite Bible verses and hymns in English and Spanish; she was praising HIM and reciting even during her final days.
As a founding member of Primera Iglesia Bautista, Rebecca’s spiritual leadership included Sunday School teaching, Girls Auxiliary, choir member, and serving as the matriarch of the Dorcas Women’s Ministry. In addition to her dedication to her church, she was a member of the Order of Eastern Star #1127, and former Brownie and Girl Scout leader.
She is preceded in death by her husband, George G. Edwards; her parents, Felipe and Herlinda Estrada; son in law, Garland Smith; four brothers, Leo, Tito, Raul, and Juan Estrada; six sisters, Sarah Davis, Minerva Addelman, Ruth Holmes, Esther Smith, Geraldine Perez, and Juanita Cruz.
Rebecca’s legacy will continue with her five generations as she is survived by her children, Maxine (Benny) Gonzalez of Corpus Christi, TX; George (Linda) Edwards of Corpus Christi, TX; Cynthia Smith of Houston, TX; and Sharon (Hal) Cook of Combine, TX; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and her sisters, Orfa Estrada-Flores of Hemet, CA and Hope Kelly of Corpus Christi, TX. She will be missed by numerous family members and hundreds of adoring friends.
Special thanks to her beautiful caregivers over the years, Angel Bright Hospice who kept her comfortable at the end, and her longtime physician, Dr. John Schulze.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the food pantry/clothes closet at Primera Iglesia Bautista or an organization of your choice.
The family will receive visitors at 10 AM on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at Primera Iglesia Bautista, 1509 Tarlton, Corpus Christi, TX. The Funeral Service will follow at 11 AM. Entombment will be held that same day at 1 PM at Seaside Memorial Park.
