

Rey lived a life of dedication to his country, family, and his wife of 56 years, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and strength. Together, him and Estefana built a life rich in love and Family to include four children, ten grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
At the age of 16, Rey proudly joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served as an airman 2nd Class aircraft mechanic. His service took him to numerous locations across Europe, including Germany and France. One of his fondest memories from his time in the Air Force was playing for the U.S. Air Force football league, the "Toul Tigers," where they achieved a nearly perfect 10-0 season only losing in the championship round. Rey retired in 2007 after 42 years employed with the Corpus Christi Army Depot as a supervisor for the Bearing Shop.
Known as the Patriarch of his family, Rey was a steadfast protector and provider. He was a man whose presence made others feel safe, loved, and supported. His family and friends will always remember his generosity and warmth, making everyone feel welcome and cared for—whether by hosting a party or offering a place to stay.
Rey is reunited with his beloved wife of 56 years, Estefana Esparza; parents, Ramon Esparza Sr. and Angela Tovar Esparza; and brothers, Ramon (Alyce L.) Esparza Jr. and Julian T. (Herminia V.) Esparza.
Rey is survived by his children, Richard (Maggie) Gonzales, Yolanda Tanguma (Cecilio Cervantes), Cynthia (Richard) Esparza-Vela, and Imelda (the late Mauricio G.) Moreno; ten grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
Visitation will be held at 1 PM on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at Memory Gardens Funeral Home, where a Holy Rosary will be recited at 1:30 PM. A Funeral Celebration will follow at 2 PM, with a Reception Gathering to begin at 3 PM where friends and family are invited to honor and celebrate Rey’s life. The family will be honoring Rey’s wishes of cremation and will hold an Inurnment with Final Military Honors at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery at 10 AM on Friday, December 20, 2024.
Rey’s legacy of love, loyalty, and service will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His memory will be cherished forever, and his example will inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
