Robert was born on January 28, 1937 in Bryan, Texas, to the late Robert Moton and Lillie Bell Hailey. He
was raised by his grandfather, Harold Hailey, and later by his aunt, Onie Mae Johnson. After graduating
from E.A. Kemp High School, he pursued a career as a national truck driver.
Robert married his best friend, Alonia Hampton Stevens, on July 26, 1969 in Corpus Christi, Texas. In
1970, Robert became employed with Central Power & Light - currently known as AEP - as an electrical
patrolman and retired after 28 years of service.
In 1972, Robert volunteered as a coach for CC Youth Football League with his children by his side. He
eventually became vice president of CC Youth Football League and was later inducted into its Hall of
Fame in 1990. He would often pay for youths who wanted to play but could not afford the league’s fees.
It was his mission that no child was left behind. After retiring from the league in 2002, the league named
a playing field in his honor for his commitment and dedication.
Throughout his life, Robert held an unwavering faith in God. He was an active and dedicated member of
Calvary First Baptist Church. He served in numerous leadership positions including its Usher Board and
was selected “Man of the Year” for his service. He will be, specifically, remembered for his grilling talents,
which he often provided at many events held on behalf of his church community. He was very passionate
towards helping those who needed a hand.
Robert was a fun-loving, kind-hearted and a generous man to all that knew him. He touched the lives of
many. Now in the arms of Jesus, and with those who have gone before him, he will be remembered and
missed by his family, friends, and those assisted and touched by his presence.
In addition to being a dedicated and loving father, Robert enjoyed rodeos, listening to his “down home”
Blues, staying actively involved with his children and grandchildren, traveling with his wife, and sitting in
his garage waving and greeting others as they passed by.
He is preceded in death by his parents; grandfather; aunt; a son, Roy A. Stevens; two brothers Earnest
and Ervin Jackson; a sister, Nova Jean Alexander; and, best friend and brother-in-law, Horace W.
Arkadie.
Cherishing the memories of Robert are his beloved wife of 50 years: Alonia Hampton Moton; three
daughters, Theresa Rice, Schairmain R. Moton of Plano, TX, and Angela (JJ) Moton-Moss; a son,
Danniel (Jacquie) Stevens of Aurora, IL; a brother, Louis Alexander of Houston, TX; a sister, Ruby
Henderson of Tyler, TX; eleven grandchildren; and, five great-grandchildren.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, services will be private and limited. A memorial service will be
scheduled at some future date.
