In the early morning of Monday, August 30, 2021, our mother Silveria Grimaldo Carrillo was called Home to the Lord. She was born on July 24, 1929, in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. During her long and blessed life of 92 years, she accomplished many things of which she was proud. She was a devout Catholic and was a parishioner at Our Lady of Guadalupe for many years. As a member of the Guadalupanas, she helped provide Sunday breakfast for the congregation. For almost 30 years, our mom was known as “La Senora de los Tamales.” She made the greatest tamales in town at the time! Aside from being a devout Catholic, our mom was also a dedicated Democrat. She prided herself in providing tamales for former United States Representative Solomon P. Ortiz and former State Representative and State Senator Carlos F. Truan for their special events. Our mother always spoke with gratitude about the Bonilla and Lozano families as well, after she became an American citizen in 1975, she never missed a local, state, or national election.
Silveria Carrillo worked with the Housing Authority and retired about 10 years later. But retirement was not for her. Since she was always active, she joined the City of Corpus Christi as a Senior Companion. She truly enjoyed her volunteer time working with the elderly. She was punctual, professional, and compassionate with her clients. Our mom was in the Senior Companion program for 21 years and was voted Senior Companion of the Year in 2013.
She became a widow at a young age and focused on her family throughout her life. We remember playing Loteria on Sundays at her house; tamales and bunuelos at Christmas; menudo on New Year’s Day; shrimp tortas during Lent; the smell and taste of homemade corn tortillas every single morning regardless of the holiday; and so many other wonderful memories. Mom, we will always love you and appreciate everything you did for us.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Eleuterio Grimaldo and Elena Quiroz; husband, Jose Carrillo, Sr.; daughter, Yolanda Cardenas; son, Jose Carrillo, Jr; grandson, Jerry Galindo; great-grandson, Jerry Alexander Galindo; her sisters, Hortencia G. de Arevalo and Juanita G. de la Fuente; a brother, Lorenzo Grimaldo.
