

He was born February 21, 1926 in Sand Springs, Oklahoma to parents Stephen Meville Barrett and Anna Mae Humphrey Barrett.
Stephen was honored to serve his country as a Sergeant in the 274 Infantry Regiment - Company G, Battalion, during World War II. Upon his return to the states, he graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in chemistry and began a career as a chemist at the Suntide Chemical Plant in Corpus Christi. He later taught mathematics for the CCISD until his retirement in 1986.
Stephen enjoyed traveling to many domestic and foreign destinations including Alaska, Yosemite, Glacier, the Great Smoky Mountains, and the Rocky Mountains National Parks.
Highlights of his foreign travel included Caribbean and Mediterranean cruises, and rail adventures across Europe and Nova Scotia. Politics played an important role in Stephen’s life. He was instrumental in establishing and enlarging the political base for the Republican Party in Nueces County.
Stephen enjoyed rock collecting, dabbling in oil painting, gardening, and woodworking. He experienced great pride and pleasure in the treasures he built for his grandchildren including;
rocking horses, doll houses, bird houses, puppet theatres, and soap-box derby cars. Stephen is survived by his wife of 49 years, Frances Barrett, daughters Kelly Garza and Kim Armstrong, son-in-law Mike
Armstrong and grandchildren: Cameron Armstrong, Jillian Armstrong, Stephen Armstrong, Matthew Garza, and Nicole Garza.
He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his family. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at the First United Methodist Church in Corpus Christi on Sunday, October 3. 2010. The family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
