Born with a thyroid condition that resulted in an intellectual disability, Velma grew up surrounded by the love of her parents, sister Diana, and brothers O.C. and David. Her grandmother, Josefa Hernandez Rivas, helped care for her while both parents worked full time.
After the family moved to Corpus Christi, Velma became one of the first clients of the Corpus Christi State School. For the past 18 years, she received loving care from Coastal Area Support Alternatives (CASA) in a group home with a warm, family atmosphere.
Velma is survived by her brothers, Osbaldo “O.C.” Garza (Marylynn) and David Garza (Julie); brother-in-law, Tom Chandler (Stella); nieces, Karin Kunkel (Chad) and Celina Garza; nephew, Ethan Garza; and great-nieces, Bryanna (Allan Bowling), Megan, and Sarah Kunkel. Her extended family has deep roots in Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande Valley.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her older sister, Diana Chandler.
Her family extends heartfelt thanks to CASA, especially longtime caregivers Liz and Rose, for their devoted care, and to New Century Hospice for providing comfort and medical support in her final days.
We will have a Catholic graveside service for Velma on Tuesday, November 10, at 3:30pm at Memory Gardens, 8200 Old Brownsville Road, Corpus Christi, TX 78415.
