Walter Joseph Dietz Jr., 75, of Corpus Christi, passed away on September 11, 2026. Known as “Joe” to his friends and family, he lived life surrounded by family and friends, all of whom loved him dearly. Joe was born July 3, 1951, in San Antonio, grew up in Corpus Christi and graduated from W.B. Ray High School. Thereafter, he attended Texas A&I University. He earned a degree in Business Administration and was a proud member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
After college graduation, he began a long and fulfilling career as a tool salesman, eventually obtaining a sales route with Snap-On Tools and, later, Matco Tools. He quickly became a familiar face in the mechanic shops around Corpus Christi and to the mechanics and shop owners, he was more than a salesman. He was someone they looked forward to seeing, someone who remembered their names and asked about their families. He was an advocate for his customers and was quick to offer help, advice, and an encouraging word for those he saw on his route.
Joe loved adventure, especially with his beloved wife, Cindy. Whether it was riding their motorcycles on the back roads of the Hill Country, watching the deer in the distance in Leakey, or camping in the mountains of New Mexico, he and Cindy were always striking out for new vistas to see and new sunsets to watch. An avid hunter, Joe loved being in the cold mountains with an elk in front of him and a bear to his side, tracking his movements (a great story and one that Joe could tell to delight of all ). Joe was an avid hunter, but for him it was not about the trophy, but more about the hunt itself. It was about the journey and the inner peace the mountains brought him.
Joe was a member of Clyde’s Archery, where he competed in numerous archery contests. He was also a member of the Corpus Christi Gun Club and would spend many a Saturday on the range, perfecting his aim. If not on the gun range, in the fall you could find him watching college football or enjoying listening to music, which was one of his passions.
Joe was well known for his warmth, his kindness, and his sense of forgiveness. He saw humor in everything, even at himself. He had an infectious laugh and a welcoming heart. Whether you had just met Joe or you were one of his college buddies that he had known for 50 years, Joe made everyone feel valued and that he had known you forever.
But most of all, Joe was a devoted and faithful husband, father, and grandfather. He was a true and strong man of God who dedicated his life to his family, especially to Cindy, his first and true love. While we know that our parting is temporary, Joe will be missed in this life by all that knew him and loved him.
Joe was predeceased by his Grandfather Walter A. “Oppie” Dietz, Father Walter Joseph Dietz Sr., Mother Joyce McKinney, his brother Daryl Dietz, and his sister Joyce Ann Pittman. He is survived by his wife, Cindy; his daughter, Jennifer Reed, and her husband, Adam; his son, Walter Ty Dietz, and his wife, Sarah Keeble; grandchildren Faith, Ellye, Georgia, Josephine, and Michael.
A Funeral Mass will be held on October 23, 2026, at 11am at St. Andrew by the Sea Catholic Church
