Alan was a truck driver for over 50 years before retiring. He was a selfless and generous man who always put the needs of others before his own. Known for his ornery sense of humor and quick wit, he loved to joke with family and friends. He had a soft spot for his dogs, especially Casper and Roxie. Alan loved going out for breakfast and also enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing, camping, working on cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Alan will be deeply missed by those who loved him.
He is survived by his children, Gary Nelson of Coshocton, Bobbie Roahrig of Coshocton, Toni (John) Hammersley of Charleston, SC and Nicole (Duane) Yutzy of Charleston, SC. Thirteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and siblings, Jeff (Teresa) Young, Steve Young, Kurt Young, Ginger Lee Elliot and Jennifer (Troy) Williams.
Alan is preceded in death by his parents, his son, Jeremy Smith and his brother, Greg Young.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday at 12:30 pm at Franklin Cemetery.
