Joan was the daughter of Gene and Eloise Wolfe and the beloved sister of Bob Wolfe. From her earliest years, she cherished her family roots, remained close to her cousins, and nurtured friendships that lasted a lifetime.
A proud 1958 graduate of Coshocton High School, Joan treasured the lifelong friends she made in Pleasant Valley and Coshocton. Her “card playing” group became a source of laughter, companionship, and joy in her later years.
Joan was immensely proud of her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her children: Johnetta (Duke) Carey of Westerville, Ohio; Rodney (Julie) Sheets Jr. of Columbus, Ohio; and Roger Sheets (Donna Zetty) of Coshocton. Her grandchildren—John (Megan) Sheets, Kara (Brian) Hartline, and Ben Sheets—brought her endless joy. She adored her great grandchildren: Avery, Betty and Ida Sheets; Brayden, Brooklyn and Kameron Hartline; and Bentley McNerlin. She also lovingly embraced her step grandchildren Maggie (Jimmy Kerr) Carey and Liam (Diana) Carey, and step great grandchild June Kerr. She is also survived by her former husband, Rodney Sheets Sr. of Coshocton who remained a lifelong friend.
For 25 years, Joan served the community as a rural carrier for the Coshocton Post Office, where she was known for her reliability, kindness, and friendly spirit.
Bowling was one of Joan’s greatest passions. Over fifty years—right up until 2025—she bowled in numerous leagues, traveled for tournaments, and earned many awards. The friendships she formed on the lanes were very meaningful to her.
Joan was also a devoted genealogist, pouring her heart into preserving family histories. She held several leadership roles in the Coshocton County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogy Society: Correspondent Secretary (1998–1999), Vice President (2001–2006), and President (2008–2026). She proudly certified family generations in First Families, Pioneer Families, Century Families, and Civil War Families, and she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her dedication ensured that countless stories and legacies would be preserved for generations.
She loved traveling, spending time with friends and family, and cheering on the Cleveland Indians (Guardians) and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Joan’s kindness, generosity, and steady love made her a cherished mother, daughter, cousin, and friend.
Barbara “Joan” Sheets leaves behind a legacy of warmth, dedication, and deep family pride—one that will continue to live on in the many people who loved her.
