JoAnne Porter Barker

April 24, 1931January 6, 2021

JoAnne Porter Barker, age 89, of Pleasant City, formally of Coshocton, passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, due to complications of COVID-19 along with her husband, Herb who passed away on December 16, 2020 . She was born on April 24, 1931, in Coshocton County to the late Raymond and Velma (Hagans) Carpenter. After graduating from Ridgewood High School in 1949, JoAnne worked at Edmonts and Shaw Barton then in the 1960s, she started working for Clary Brothers and several other florist until she purchased her own Greenhouse and Nursery on Cemetery Drive in Coshocton. JoAnne enjoyed quilting and was a wonderful seamstress. She loved to travel and spend time with her family. She was a member of the Ava United Methodist Church and a 50 year member of the Coshocton #157 OES where she served many times as a Worthy Matron and was a plural member with Guernsey County and merged with Muskingum County Chapter #485, where she served as Past District Deputy Grand Matron. Survived by her three sons, Michael Porter of Cohoscton, Thomas (Jane) Porter of Coshocton and Ronald Porter of Waco, Texas; five step-children,Gary Barker of Pleasant City, Diane (Charlie) Colangelo of Pleasant City, Kathy (Charlie) Cook of Sarahsville, Herbie (Melodie) Barker of Byesville and Susie (George) Allen of Sarashville; seven grandchildren, Sean Porter, Jeff Bosson, Bryon Porter, Kimberly Porter, Amber Marquez, Jessica Porter and Erin Porter; 10 great-grandchildren, Joshua, Mason, Brayden, Blake, Claude, Dakota, Kortney, Aiden, Mason, and Owen; sister, Judy (Tom) Cornelius of Coshocton, brother-in-law, Bob Dobson of Coshocton and several nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, JoAnne is preceded in death by her two husbands, Harry Caton Porter who passed away on November 18, 1996 and Herbert V. Barker Sr. who passed away on December 16, 2020; and two sisters, Janet (Dennis) Renner and Jean Dobson.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, January 10, 2021 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home and on Monday, January 11, 2021 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at the funeral home. Due to health and safety concerns related to COVID-19, social distancing measures will be in place and there will be a limited number of people inside the funeral home at a time. We also ask that you please wear a facemask at all times for the health and safety of our guests and employees.

A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, January 11, 2021, at South Lawn Cemetery at 12:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in JoAnne’s name to New Life Ministries, Food Pantry, 727 S. 7th St. Coshocton, Ohio 43812. Our sympathy is extended to the family of JoAnne, Herb and Harry. Joanne made me the most beautiful butterfly quilt for my year as Grand Royal Matron of the Order of the Amaranth. I will cherish it always! She was a talented and very special person. She will be missed by all who knew her! Until we meet again....
