After graduating from Woodridge High School in 1964, Dick proudly served four years in the United States Army as a tank operator. During his service in the Vietnam War, he was awarded the Purple Heart in recognition of his bravery and sacrifice.
On April 25, 1970, he married Mary Ann (Zendek) Whims of West Lafayette, who survives him.
Dick was a dedicated ironworker with Local 17 in Cleveland, proudly serving the trade for 55 years. He was an avid hunter, as well as a proud member of the Cuyahoga Falls chapter of the Moose Lodge. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Along with his wife, Mary, Dick is survived by his children, Tina Whims of Akron, Ohio and Ricky (Teresa) Whims of West Lafayette, Ohio; his grandson, Mason Marshall; and his brother, David Whims of Iowa; in addition to a host of other family, friends, and loved ones.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Shirley; his sister, Ruth Ann Crano; and his brother, Charles Whims.
Per Dick’s wishes, a cremation will take place. A private service will be held by the family at a later date. Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home is serving the family.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses at Coshocton Regional Medical Center and the staff of Community Hospice Truman House for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Dick.
